Student Safety Secrets: 5 Tips When Walking Home After Dark

Student Safety Secrets: 5 Tips When Walking Home After Dark
Posted By: Kara Masterson on April 26, 2019

Walking at night can be a scary thing, but it sometimes necessary. If you know what steps you need to take in order to keep yourself safe, then you will be able to walk with confidence. There are several ways that you can stay safe while walking alone at night.

Walk with Other Students

You are more likely to be attacked if you are by yourself. Attackers are less likely to target someone in a group because they know that there are witnesses. That is why it is a good idea to walk with at least one other person. If you do not have anyone to walk with you, then you will let someone know where you are going and what time you are supposed to reach your destination.

Wear Running Jackets with Reflectors

Many people are hit because they cannot be seen by the drivers. You can increase your visibility by wearing a runner jacket with a reflector. You will also need to avoid jaywalking. Not only is jaywalking illegal but it is also dangerous. You are more likely to be hit by a car if you cross the street at a place that you are not supposed to.

Pedestrians are often hit by negligent drivers. A personal injury attorney can help you if you’ve been in an accident. Often students don’t know their rights and don’t follow through legally due to fears of expenses and healthcare. However, you should seek healthcare and justice. Especially if this affects your job and studies.

Keep Your Keys in Your Hand

It is a good idea to walk with your keys in your hand. If you have to fumble in your purse or pocket for your keys, then you can easily be attacked. Keys can also be used as a weapon.

Change up Your Routine

Many people get into the habit of walking the same way every day. However, someone can watch you and know exactly where you are going to be at a certain time. That is why it is important to change up your routine every now and then.

Stay Alert

Attackers are often looking for people who are not paying attention. You should stay alert at all times. Avoid playing with your phone or listening to music while you are walking.
You do not have to be afraid to walk at night. You can stay safe by wearing reflectors, walking with a group and keeping your keys in your hand. You will also need to change up your routine periodically and stay alert.
