4 Immediate Career Options for Medical School Undergrads

4 Immediate Career Options for Medical School Undergrads
Posted By: Hannah Whittenly on September 10, 2020

College will keep you busy. However, it is a good idea for you to get some work experience while you are in undergrad. This will help you prepare for your medical career. There are a number of great career options that you have.

Emergency Medical Technician

Emergency medical technicians are professionals who are responsible for providing lifesaving care to people while they are en route to the hospital. You can typically complete the training that you need in just 16 weeks. You will need to pass a licensing exam before you can work as an emergency medical technician, but if you are already taking medical classes, then you should have enough base knowledge to help you study effectively for the exam.

Emergency Room Scribe

One of the things that physicians do in order to ensure that they deliver the best care is to take notes. Emergency room scribes have been trained to write down the doctor's notes. Although a degree is preferred, you can be an emergency room scribe with just a high school diploma. You will need to be familiar with medical terminology, but you can complete the training that you need on-the-job. This will not only allow you to use previously developed writing skills, but it will also help increase your familiarity with terms that you’ll be using for the rest of your career.

Certified Nursing Assistant

Certified nursing assistants provide basic medical care. They can take vitals, feed patients, bathe them, and help them get dressed. They work in hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and in the patient's home. You can complete the training that you need to be a certified nursing assistant in just a few weeks. You will need to pass an exam.

Medical Assistant

Medical assistants work alongside physicians and nurses. They are responsible for delivering both clinical and administrative duties. They can make appointments for patients and maintain medical records. They can also give injections, take vital signs and prepare patients for exams. Most medical assistants work in clinics and doctor's offices. However, some medical assistants work in hospitals. You can go to an online medical assistant school for training and certification, which means flexible scheduling for while you learn. You will be able to take all of the classes that you need online, but you will have to do in-person clinicals. You can complete the training that you need to become a medical assistant in just one year.

You can prepare for your career in medicine by working while you are in undergraduate school. You can become an emergency medical technician. You can also become a medical assistant, certified nursing assistant, or emergency room scribe. Those careers will give you the experience that you need for your future medical career.
