How to Start Building a Career as a Security Guard

How to Start Building a Career as a Security Guard
Posted By: Dixie Somers on November 16, 2020

A guard is like any other professional and should take pride in his or her job. Security guards should give their all and strive to be the best. Here are proven ways to make you a great security guard.

Find a Mentor

One way to succeed as a chief security officer is to look for someone who can inspire and advise you. A mentor will not only inspire you but also criticize you when you go wrong.

Understand Your Work Policies

It is impossible to succeed as a security guard if you donít understand the procedures and policies that govern your job. The first step a security guard should take after securing a job is to carefully read their companyís policies and regulations as if they are a test. Those guidelines arenít just on paper. You will at some point have to prove that you understand them.

Keep Learning

One way to hone your knowledge and skills as a security guard is to attend seminars and workshops. The more a guard learns, the more their employer appreciates their expertise and gets impressed by their work. After all, the performance of a less knowledgeable guard can never match that of a highly trained guard.

Workshops and seminars are an excellent opportunity for guards to practice continuous learning and learn from experienced professionals.

Donít quit training and exercising now that you have secured a job as a chief security officer. Instead, keep working out to remain fit for your job. Aerobic and strength exercises will keep you in great shape and ready for whatever your career as a guard may present. Also, consider including self-defense in your workout routine. Workouts can be made fun by bringing a friend or co-worker aboard.

Stay Updated

Guards should be aware of crimes that take place around their workplace. Guards that are aware of what is happening around them are always ready for anything that may come their way.

Never Assume

One mistake that a guard can make is to ignore what is happening around them. Never assume that someone living near your workplace canít be a criminal because you have seen him or her in uniform or suit. Rules should be enforced on everyone and not just those that you are suspicious about.

By applying all of the above, you can be sure to achieve any goal as a guard. Working out, staying updated, and attending seminars and workshops will equip you with the resume and tools needed to succeed as a guard. Combining any or all of these tactics can give you an edge over other job applicants.
