Tips for Being Proactive and Involved in Your Classes While Doing Online School
Posted By: Dixie Somers on January 04, 2021 Studying online is a growing trend with its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, virtual classes provide greater flexibility and give access to students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate in higher education. The problem with online courses is that they make meaningful engagement more difficult. In a physical classroom, collaboration and communication between students and teachers comes naturally. In online classes, students have to work harder to make these connections. All the same, there is plenty you can do as a student to stay involved during your virtual classes. Whether you’re completing an online university for military personnel or have been sent home from campus during the pandemic, try these four strategies for participating in online classes. Ask Plenty of QuestionsQuestions from students are a driving force in any class, even when they’re conducted online. Putting yourself out there in a virtual setting might be more difficult, but it’s imperative that you make the effort. Not only do questions make class discussions and lectures more fruitful, but they can also clear up any confusions that you and your classmates might share. Comment on Your Classmates’ WorkWhile students learn primarily from their professors, they also benefit from interacting with their classmates. In online courses, these interactions often take the form of comments on each others’ work. Try to participate in this element of online classes. It might be awkward at first, but once you get used to it you’ll find your classes much more dynamic and useful. Put Serious Effort Into Reflections and Other AssignmentsIn online classes, written reflections and blog posts often take the place of traditional class discussions. Even if you’re not being graded, try to think deeply and apply yourself fully to these assignments. Taking these posts seriously is the only way to make the most of the course. Communicate Directly With ClassmatesFeel free to reach out to your virtual classmates. In a traditional course, students often chat about their assignments and make sure they’re all on the same page. You don’t have to miss out on this aspect of the student experience just because your class is online. Direct messages to your classmates will foster healthy relationships and help you get more out of the course. Virtual courses certainly take some getting used to. Participation and engagement might seem awkward at first, but one you get used to it, you'll have a much better experience.
