How to Stay Healthy When Living on Campus
Posted By: Brooke Chaplan on December 21, 2021 Staying in a college dorm can be an exciting experience. You have an opportunity to create memories that last for a lifetime. However, along with your newfound freedom comes more responsibility. Here’s how to stay healthy when living on campus. Get Enough SleepIdeally, you should aim to get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Unfortunately, studies show that more than 70 percent of colleges students fail to do so. When sleep quality takes a hit, your mental sharpness will suffer. Instead of staying up all night to cram for a test, get your studying done well ahead of time. Try to develop a disciplined mindset that makes sleep a top priority. Exercise RegularlyMake it a point to keep active. Although you don’t need to train like an Olympic athlete, be sure to break a sweat at least three times a week. Not only does working out help promote better physical fitness, but it also enhances your ability to think clearly. Furthermore, exercise is a proven stress buster. After getting in a good workout, many people notice a big decrease in anxiety. Limit Your PartyingIt’s perfectly normal for college students to indulge in nightlife. While it can be fun to go out on the weekends, don’t become a complete party animal. Binge drinking has become a serious issue at many off-campus events. Aside from putting unnecessary stress on your body, alcohol consumption is illegal for anyone under the age of 21. Monitor Your Eating and Drinking HabitsIt’s no secret that many college students develop unhealthy eating habits. Processed foods, like pizza and burgers, are extremely popular on campus. To help keep your health in peak condition, consume more fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating nutritiously will make you feel far more energized in the long run. It can also boost your immune system, which makes you less likely to get sick. If you need to stay energized, you should consider drinking coffee instead of energy drinks. Many energy drinks contain taurine which can be unhealthy if you consume it in large amounts. Coffee makers such as Gravity Coffee Company give you a lot of great energizing beverages to choose from, including blended coffees and tea fusions. Many of these drinks can help you limit your sugar intake as well. Be SanitaryDorms can be a haven for germs. Be sure to routinely sanitize surfaces and doorknobs with antibacterial wipes. Also, don’t forget to wash your bedding every week. When using community showers, always remember to wear slippers. While living on campus opens the door for you to have a lot of fun, never put your health on the back burner. Don’t take any unnecessary risks. You can have a blast without jeopardizing your personal well-being. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
