5 Steps To Help You Become an Audio Engineer

5 Steps To Help You Become an Audio Engineer
Posted By: Kara Masterson on March 28, 2022

Are you interested in becoming an audio engineer? Well, don't worry because I'm going to let you know exactly what people need to do in order to become one. It takes years to become a professional audio engineer, just as it does for any other profession you might want to enter, but the basics are pretty easy and straightforward.

Watch Another Audio Engineer Work
Your first step is to spend a lot of time with other sound engineers. You can do this by offering your services for free at local concerts, working as an intern, or even just watching videos online and studying them. This can be a great way to learn more about the industry and how things work. And it's also a great way to make contacts within the industry.

Go To School
Next, you'll need to find an educational program that will help you hone your skills and teach you more about the field. Many community colleges offer audio engineering programs. You may also want to consider going to a trade school or even getting your degree in audio engineering from an accredited university.

After you complete your education and training, you'll be ready to start looking for a job in the field. You should always keep in mind that many audio engineering jobs require some sort of certification or license, so if there is any special training that you need, be sure to look into it before applying for jobs.

Be Adventurous
Now that you know what audio engineering involves, it's time to start having fun with it.

There are lots of free DAWs (digital audio workstations) available for download online, so grab one and start messing around. If there are any tutorials available for the software you've chosen, then have a go at following them as well.

Invest in a Home Studio
It's crucial that you have a place you can go to every day to practice your craft. If you're serious about music production, there are certain things you have to have beyond just your computer and speakers. You need some sort of audio interface to connect your instruments and microphones to your computer. You also need reference monitors (speakers) so that you can hear what your mixes sound like outside of headphones or earbuds.

Learn an Instrument
Learning to play an instrument can teach you skills that you'll need to become an audio engineer. It can also help you decide whether or not this is a career path you'd enjoy. You could start by taking lessons on piano or guitar, or even just learning how to read sheet music. If you already know how to play an instrument, there's no better time to start than now. If not, it may be worth signing up for some classes at your local school or community center.

Audio engineers are the people that run large recording studios, record live music shows and concerts, mix music and soundtracks and produce radio shows. However, it's not as hard to become an audio engineer as you may think. The training is available for free or for a small fee, and you don't even need to own equipment in most cases.
