Love Teaching Special Ed? 4 Ways to Become a Certified Teacher
Posted By: Anita Ginsburg on May 09, 2022 Teaching students with special needs can be a deeply rewarding career. Earning a teaching certification is very doable when you can take advantage of any of the following ways to earn your degree. With special education teachers in high demand, you could soon be enjoying the job of your dreams. Enroll for Part Time Classes You don't have to enroll full-time to earn a college teaching degree. If you have a full-time job or other responsibilities, you can take classes on a part-time basis. Talk to an academic adviser about your availability and scheduling needs. There are often classes offered at various hours throughout the day and evening. An adviser can help you get registered in classes that work with your lifestyle. See if Life Experience Counts Many colleges and universities offer credit for previous courses taken elsewhere, so you may be eligible for transfer credit for passing classes that apply to a special education degree. Life experience in a job working with people or students who have special needs may also earn extra credit, although without grades. Work experience can sometimes contribute to your college education and be counted toward graduation. An academic adviser can inform you about the kind of credits you may be eligible for. Earn a Degree With Weekend Classes Many institutions of higher education offer weekend classes. You can earn a college degree by taking several or most of your required courses in a weekend program that enables you to do other things during the week. Weekend classes are typically longer, sometimes three or four hours, and are offered Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, day or night. You may be able to earn some of these credits through field work or research, which will enable you to study from home instead of being in class every weekend. Take Online Special Ed Coursework With more colleges offering an online special education program, you can take some or all of your coursework online from home at your convenience. Of course, assignments will have a due date, and you may be expected to participate in online discussions or listen to lectures at certain times, although that is not always required. Taking coursework online for a special education degree will let you maintain your current lifestyle until you're ready to do a student teaching internship, which might be offered virtually. With so many options to choose from, start planning for a college degree in special education. You can apply and get admitted possibly in time to enroll for the next semester.
