How to Find Employment After College

How to Find Employment After College
Posted By: Brooke Chaplan on November 11, 2022

The first few weeks after graduation can be a liberating and carefree experience, but it doesn't take long for reality to set in. Finding employment is the first big step after college for most people and will be much easier for some than others. No matter what kind of education you have or the job you want, there are a few ways to start going after the positions that you really want.

Followup Internships

The most reliable way to get employment after college is to get involved with internships during your education. Internships can open up a world of opportunities you would have otherwise missed. Just the fact that you have name and face recognition from a temporary assignment can greatly boost your chances. Even if you don't want to work at the same place you interned, be sure to leverage the experience and letters of recommendation.

Use a Staffing Agency

A staffing agency is another great way for people with any background to start getting into professional life. There are a lot of different options and opportunities for people with different skills.

Staffing agencies serve as a central point of contact between organizations and potential employees, which means it's a good place for job seekers to start.

Build Profiles

Most employers expect applicants to have some presence on the internet and they usually check to find out. This means it can pay off to build up some professional profiles to give them something to find. LinkedIn is a basic and common choice, but it's far from the only one. Even things like Twitter and Facebook can reflect your personality and could determine if an employer will offer you a job or not.

Provide Independent Services

Many people can also start working for themselves immediately after college whether they want to seek a job or not. Freelance or contract services can be a great way to supplement income or even lead to full-time work as an independent contractor. Freelancing can be more challenging than it seems though, which is why many professionals wait till they have a decade or two of experience before trying to provide services solo.

Even if employment isn't your immediate goal after graduating college, it's something you should keep in your mind. Skills, knowledge, and network connections can fade a lot faster than you think, so don't wait too long to start moving your career forward.
