4 Signs It's Time to Check Your Brakes
Posted By: Kara Masterson on January 11, 2023 Anyone who owns a vehicle can tell you it’s important to stay on top of its maintenance to ensure it remains in proper working order for as long as possible. While many important components in your car work together to make it run, one of the most important is the brakes. Without your brakes, things can get dangerous fast, so knowing the state of them becomes almost vital when it comes time to operate your car. Knowing when and how often to check your brakes is essential for keeping yourself, your passengers, and other drivers safe. That’s why if you’re experiencing any of the following, it might be time to take your car in to get the brakes looked at before you have a problem to worry about - namely, that you can’t stop your car when you need to! Unusual NoisesUnusual noises coming from your brakes should never be ignored, as they can be an early signal warning of serious issues that may need to be addressed. Common brake noises can range from squealing and grinding to scraping, and these can be caused by issues such as worn brake pads or rotors. If these sounds are left unattended, it could eventually lead to more complex problems with your brakes that not only require more costly repairs but also create a risk while driving. Keeping your brakes in peak condition is the best way to stay safe behind the wheel. Other unusual sounds could be from a stuck caliper or seized brake pads. If your brakes sound too noisy, bring them in for service as soon as possible. VibrationsVibrations in your steering wheel while braking can often indicate a problem with the rotors, calipers, or other components in your braking system. If detected, it is important to visit a qualified mechanic right away to have these items inspected. Warping of rotors is one of the most frequently reported issues when the problem of vibration comes up while braking and should be serviced or replaced swiftly in order to maintain the optimum performance of your brakes. Ignoring this warning sign could lead to a higher risk of putting you and other drivers in danger. PullingBrake repair can be a straightforward and simple job if caught early on, but left unattended it can develop into a much more serious issue as brake lines and calipers can become quite costly to repair. If, while driving, you notice that you are having to pull your vehicle in either direction when you brake, then it is time to take action. Don't wait until your brake problems worsen or become even costlier for repairs; get ahead of the problem now. Professional brake technicians have the specialized tools and knowledge required to identify the source of the brake problems, make necessary brake repairs and ensure your safety on the road. Slow Response TimeThe common time it takes for your brakes to react should be anywhere from a second and a half, enough time for you to stop well after you realize you need to and well before you come close to hitting anything. Any longer and it's likely you have a problem. A common reason for it to feel like your brakes are taking longer to respond could be a result of air in the brake lines. If, as you press your brake pedal and it feels spongy or there is a noticeable delay before your car begins to slow, then it’s time for a service. Air can enter the brake lines due to plumbing issues which disrupts the balance of pressure resulting in an ineffective braking system. Another common reason could be due to a fluid leak, so take it in for service as soon as possible. Taking care of your car’s maintenance is key for ensuring safe operation and prolonged use over time! If you think something might be off with your brakes, don't hesitate to have them looked at by a qualified mechanic who can diagnose any issues and ensure they are properly taken care of going forward. Remember—it's always better (and safer) to get ahead of any potential problems before they turn into major ones down the road.
