This 2021 filly is for sale:

Horse birth

Ice had suffered a broken gutteral pouch post and neurological injury at the base of her skull as a 6month old filly. We made sure this piece of her life was still viable and assisted her successful delivery of Rona, who is a beautiful, healthy, well socialized with both horses and people filly.

See Ice's behavior in the stall an hour prior to foaling.     • Beautifulice Asscher (...   Great video footage of what to look for for imminent foaling behavior. It's like they are trying to get away from themselves.

We are welcoming our 5th generation of foals onto Wildest Expectations Farm. Ice, the dam, was the 4th generation of our very successful, internationally recognized, breeding program. Although this is our backyard, this is not a backyard breeding operation. We are a boutique breeder of exceptional quality warmbloods since 1993.

This is the first foal Ice had. She did great and had a beautiful filly Ripple in Time (Rona) When the front feet and nose are out and exposed Christine opens the placenta so once the shoulders are past the mare's pelvic passage (which is when foals take their first breath) the foal will be able to breath without inhaling amniotic fluid which can compromise viability.

We do a lot of imprint training before the foals are even out of their moms and after. Notice fingers in ears, nose, mouth. Foals have an ability to learn so much right from birth. People who have bought our youngsters all comment on how trusting and desensitized these young horses are as a result of early handling. Light traction is applied only when the mare is pushing. Most of the assisting is simply keeping legs organized and the fillies airway in a position to drain.

Notice how much fluid drains out of the fillies mouth and nose early on in the birth process when she's mostly out.

Also notice Christine's using her feet and legs to keep the foal close to mom until the umbilical cord (in her right hand) stops pulsing and goes cool. This indicates all the extra blood that the mare can share with the filly gets passed to the foal before the cord breaks off naturally. The umbilicus on the filly is sprayed with betadine which helps prevent infection entering through this vulnerable opening. The filly gets a couple of warm enemas to ensure the meconium passes successfully. The mare gets a shot of banamine to help with cramping, acepromazine to relax her and help her milk come in. She also gets some oral electrolytes to encourage fluid intake. The foal is moved forward into reach of the mare to encourage bonding and also to allow the mare to remain down as long as she wishes, as she is unsteady at this point and could hurt herself or her foal, but still be able to lick and stimulate her foal.

In nature mares and foals have about a 40% survival rate. This does a good job of keeping horse populations under control. Our goal is to raise that percentage of surviving mares and foals. We support both the mares and foals without getting between them. We encourage our mares to interact with their foals throughout the birth.

At the conclusion of this video the placenta is inspected to ensure it is healthy and intact. If it has any unhealthy surface areas (indicating potential compromised health for the foal) or it looks as if any of the placenta have been retained in the mares uterus (indicating possible potential uterine infection for the mare) this would be relayed to my vet while making the 24 hour mare/foal exam and iGg test.

There are some great questions posed by viewers in the comment section. We get into some really detailed information. If you see something you don't understand feel free to ask, we'll be happy to share our 30+ years of breeding experience.
