Basic Function and Responsibility:

The house manager directs and coordinates the work of the house staff and is responsible

for ensuring that the theater is clean and orderly before and after each performance. They

are also responsible for the safe passage and conduct of the audience during the entire

time that the audience is on the premises of the theater.



Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Schedules, trains, and supervises the ushers, who take tickets hand out programs and

lead patrons to their seats. Makes sure that ushers have whatever supplies are needed to

their job, such as a flashlight.

2. Conduct a pre-show walk-through of the lobby and seating area to verify that the

house is clean and presentable for the audience. Clean the theater as needed. During

intermission, open the doors to the theater and assists audience members. After show,

clean the theater of any programs or other trash left by the audience.

3. Check in with the box office staff prior to the show. Be familiar with the latecomer's

policy and seat latecomers accordingly. Once the performance has begun, remain outside

the theater and seats any late comers.

4. Open theater doors, close doors and monitor theater during the performance and close

and lock doors after the audience has left. Ensure all lights are turned off after each show

and all doors are locked.

5. Responsible for the safety of the audience, in case of an emergency, such as fire or

tornado, know what steps to take to either evacuate the audience members, or secure

them in place.  The ushers should also be instructed in emergency procedures,

particularly where various escape routes are located.

5. Communicate with the stage manager to confirms show time, when to open the theater

to the audience and when to begin the production. If some of the stage action takes place

in and around where the audience is seated, the house manager makes sure that the aisles

are clear of people's feet or their belongings.

6. Communicate with the box office. If there is a waiting list, the house manager

coordinates with the box office manager to determine which audience members will be seated. If there is a dispute about tickets, the house manager may have to help resolve the situation.

7. Other job-related duties as assigned.



Supervision Received:

Administrative supervision is received from the Production Coordinator.



Supervision Exercised:

Functional supervision exercised over theater ushers.



Job Requirements:

1. High school degree.

2. Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to give and receive

information, advice and opinions and interact with patrons in situations requiring

sensitivity and tact.

3. Ability to pay attention to details, focus on the job, organize tasks.
