Overview
ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB’s Environmental Resources Group in Atlanta has an opening for a 6 month temporary Environmental Specialist position to work with our expanding ecology group. This position is anticipated to begin in early June 2026 and extend until the end of October 2026. The normal work schedule would be Monday-Friday approximately 40 hours per week. On occasion, the work may require more than 40 hours in a week.
This position requires regular outdoor work and some travel. Outdoor work conditions could include extreme heat and cold temperatures in wet and dry weather. Travel would generally consist of day trips with some overnight stays. Occasionally, work trips could extend for a week or more. Additionally, some flexibility is required in terms of daily project destinations/locations and hours of availability due to weather frequently and suddenly altering plans.
Responsibilities
Travelling to various monitoring locations to collect water samples, record in situ water quality data, and measure stream flow from creeks and rivers
Monitoring environmental conditions at construction sites
Assist with data entry and field equipment maintenance
Assist with fish community surveys
Coordinate and communicate with internal and external project team members
Skills and Attributes
Working knowledge of biological and environmental processes
Ability to work efficiently and perform tasks in a timely manner with attention to detail (independent problem-solving and critical thinking are important to this position)
Motivated to learn and effectively work in a team environment and office setting
Able to effectively convey technical information (strong written and verbal communication skills are paramount)
Strong organizational skills
Knowledge and ability to operate a variety of software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook
Minimum Qualifications
0-1 year of fieldwork experience in natural habitats, whether through coursework or professional experience
BS in natural science related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Biology, Landscape Architecture, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Natural Resources)
OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher certifications required for site investigation & remediation services
Internship experience preferred
Possess a valid driver’s license and the capability to drive to multiple sites per day
