Earth Day and Green Initiatives at McGraw-Hill
Earth Day is a reminder that we are all accountable for the future of our planet. Everyone - individuals, communities and organizations - has a role to play. And even in difficult economic times, job seekers are looking to work for companies that have strong commitments to social responsibility and green initiatives.
McGraw-Hill's ongoing commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainability is seen in many ways around our company. McGraw-Hill Construction's GreenSource magazine covers green building and design; S&P Indices provides investors with indexes that measure companies according to their carbon efficiency; McGraw-Hill Education is increasing its range of digital products and supports textbook recycling. And J.D. Power and Associates has a new initiative to help consumers sort out what all the claims of "green" by companies really mean.
Our employees around the world are dedicated to their communities year-round, but we also celebrate June with Global Volunteer Day - a paid day of volunteer activities in which 6,000 employees took part, volunteering nearly 40,000 hours in 2011. Among the accomplishments:
Nearly 10,000 students were reached by employees volunteering at more than 50 schools across India. In many of the schools, water treatment equipment was repaired or constructed, enabling safe drinking water for students. |
More than 1,000 job seekers in the U.S received career training and interview preparation. |
An estimated $1 million of employee time and talent was donated to our nonprofit partners. |
