MBRDNA is headquartered in Silicon Valley, California, with key areas of Autonomous Driving, Advanced Interaction Design, Digital User Experience, Machine Learning, Customer Research, and Open Innovation. In Redford, Michigan, the focus is on Powertrain and eDrive technology as well as in Long Beach, where the teams test durability of the latest driver assistant and telematic systems. The Digital Hub in Seattle focuses on developing a cloud architecture and building out the cloud platform for the next generation of connected car services. The Testing and Regulatory Affairs Division in Ann Arbor and the Advanced Vehicle Design in Carlsbad complete the competence center.

The Principal Foresight Researcher is a strategic role at Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America. This position is responsible for leading our efforts to identify and understand societal trends in the US Market, to merge them with technological trends, and to translate the insights gleaned into actionable recommendations for R&D, product management and sales teams in the US and around the world. The candidate will join the Innovation Management, Silicon Valley department which spans from research and business development to engineering teams with a strong ‘outside-in’ mindset.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities

• Identify and drive research topics that are relevant to better understand future U.S. customers of premium automotive brands based on trend analysis and future market projections.
• Within each project, responsibilities include ideation, logistics, research, team management, data synthesis and analysis, storyboarding, final report or deliverable, and communication.
• Author customized, high-impact research reports and presentations for Mercedes-Benz marketing, product development, and strategy teams. Define how societal trends affect Mercedes-Benz’ brand and products
• Responsible for establishing Mercedes-Benz R&D North America within a worldwide research network. Occasional travel domestically and internationally to present research findings, collaborate with global counterparts, and/or to conduct field research.
• Build up a strong relationship to marketing and sales to influence future roadmap decisions.
• Represent Mercedes-Benz at U.S. events to share research.

Required Qualifications

Minimum level of education required and required field of study:
Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a social science or design research field

Minimum skills required :
• At least 8+ years of work experience using social or design research methods
• You have a deep understanding of American consumer. You are highly aware of pop culture references and can easily apply them in a research context.
• You are willing to travel domestically and internationally.
• You have extensive experience using quantitative and qualitative social research methodologies.
• You are skilled in presentation tools and create high-impact and highly-informative presentations. You have a good eye for presentation design and understand basic graphic design best practices.
• You are a team player and know how to lead and foster a collaborative environment.
• You have a natural curiosity with detective-like instincts and, in a research context, know what questions to ask, when to look for more information, what information to look for, how to look for it, and can quickly recognize if given data is useful or meaningless.
• You are a storyteller who can logically connect complex or unrelated ideas. You know when and how to use qualitative and quantitative data and can effectively communicate this to a variety of executive, technical, and non-technical audiences.
• You are sensitive to the needs and habits of different cultures.
• You have the self-awareness to understand how your personal biases and beliefs may influence research studies and can exercise the necessary judgment for objectivity.
• You are both a specialist and a generalist: While there may be a specific topic area or skillset that is a natural fit for you, you will also be required to perform research on topics that may be outside your comfort zone.
• You have strong knowledge of the automotive industry (including areas such as business models, products, digitalization, market segmentation, customer segmentation, and governmental regulations) and are ideally a “car person.”
