The Intern will also gain experience in managing and marketing crowd-sourced contests and communities, event and workshop design, behavior change and the environment, and in working with a diverse set of international organizations and strategic partners to achieve these goals. The ideal candidate will be well-organized, able to work independently and as a collective team member, will possess proven experience in behavior change and/or marketing and strategy, and have project management skills.

About the Contest

Solutions to some of the world’s greatest conservation and development challenges exist in local communities around the globe. Many times, however, these solutions remain on the local level and go unnoticed by the larger community. What’s already working must be surfaced and spotlighted such that practitioners around with world can expand their impact as they replicate proven success. Solution Search, an innovative contest created by Rare, is designed to do just that. The contest sources, rewards and disseminates what is already working in conservation and development.

This currently running Solution Search contest focuses on unearthing existing and successful solutions that are reducing water pollution by changing behaviors. Reducing water pollution is critical for protecting aquatic life, ensuring public health, achieving social justice, and fomenting a resilient and thriving economy. Currently, many types of contaminants run through the world’s rivers, streams, basins and oceans, including synthetic chemicals, plastics, nitrates and fecal coliform. Behind each of these different sources lies a chain of people who engage in behaviors that lead up to the pollution we see today.

Some of these behaviors include littering, dumping raw sewage into fields, depositing industrial waste into waterways, and using and overusing synthetic fertilizers. Therefore, solving water pollution will require changing those behaviors that are contributing to it. To achieve this, the traditional tools of information, rules and regulations and financial incentives must be complemented with strategies rooted in behavioral science, including emotional appeals, social influences and choice architecture.
