The Managing Director of Customized Training Services will become a key member of the Virginia Talent Accelerator Programís leadership team as we continue a major program expansion. The primary duties involve recruiting, developing, and managing a team of talented instructional designers and facilitators who will support leading client companies as they expand their existing Virginia presence or establish a new location here.
The core deliverable is new-hire training that is fully customized to a client companyís unique jobs, processes, equipment, procedures, and standards. This deliverable is part of a comprehensive suite of services which includes talent acquisition services, as well as training in leadership, collaboration skills, quality systems, and automation technologies.
Operated by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program provides fully customized talent acquisition and training solutions at no cost to qualified new and expanding companies as an incentive for job creation. These services are delivered in partnership with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The Virginia Talent Accelerator Program competes with similar programs in other states, such as Georgia Quick Start, LED FastStart in Louisiana, and Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT).

The Managing Director of Customized Training Services reports directly to the Senior Vice President of VEDPís Talent Solutions Division. The position requires in-state travel to client locations and occasional out-of-state and international travel. Candidates interested in performing this work while residing in Blacksburg, Roanoke, or a nearby Virginia locality will be considered.
Help build and lead a team of talented instructional designers who will develop and facilitate high quality new-hire training that is fully customized to each clientís unique jobs, processes, equipment, procedures, and standards.
Assign instructional designers to new projects in a way that balances the team workload and optimizes the client experience.
Lead project kick-off meetings and needs assessments with Operations and HR executives from new client companies, as well as the partner VCCS institution. Gain a high-level understanding of each clientís:
Products, business model, and vision for the new Virginia operation.
Processes, equipment, and materials.
Construction, equipment installation, and start-up schedule.
Hiring plan, job roles, and general responsibilities.
Existing training resources and training needs.
Guide instructional designers in determining the appropriate training media, methodologies, and overall scope for the customized training.
Coach instructional designers to assume project management responsibilities and collaborate with our in-house team of illustrators, animators, videographers, and graphic designers to accelerate learning through visualization.
Review training materials, observe classes, and provide feedback to optimize training effectiveness. Monitor trainee feedback and solicit client management feedback to ensure satisfaction on each project.
Collaborate with VCCS partners to leverage opportunities to engage their resources and services into the project to optimize near and long-term support for the company. Ensure that the VCCS partner remains informed and involved in the project.
Maintain relationships with the clientís leadership team and support the instructional designers to ensure all deadlines are met and that all deliverables are highly valued by the client. Help instructional designers address scope change requests and manage scope adjustments that may be required due to shortcomings in client job creation commitments.
Leverage client relationships to help VEDP in new business investment attraction efforts to include in-person interviews/plant tours with prospective new employers, permissions to publish newsletter stories, promotional materials, etc.
Support the development of an expanded suite of modules that will serve as the programís core offerings in safety awareness training, lift vehicle operations, precision measurement, cranes & rigging, etc.
Occasionally facilitate and develop training when the need arises.
Collaborate with the Virginia Talent Accelerator leadership team to support the development and refinement of internal workflow, productivity, budget, contact, and client satisfaction systems.
Support the continual improvement of the Virginia Talent Accelerator offerings / approach to client engagements.
Bachelorís degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience required; masterís degree a plus.
Extensive experience coordinating the design, development, and delivery of training for manufacturing operations.
Project leadership and management, working within external/internal cross-functional teams.
Verbal and written communication expertise.
Operational performance management and reporting.
Support of organization-wide efforts.
Budget/contract preparation and administration.
At least 5 years of leadership experience in role which included overseeing the design and development of customized training in manufacturing.
Management of internal direct reports and indirect reports.
Division/department management, resource allocation, and project delegation.
Substantial experience in an organization whose core business is developing and delivering training services to external clients.
Substantial experience developing and delivering customized process, equipment, and job-specific training services for production workers in manufacturing plants.
Experience developing training with Articulate and Captivate.
Experience designing training supported by with 3D Studio Max.
Experience developing Google Glass or Microsoft HoloLens applications for manufacturing environments.
Experience in economic development.
Substantial private-sector experience working in and/or with large, multinational firm(s).
