Deputy Organizing Director

The Climate Action Campaign (CAC) is looking for a Deputy Director (5-7 years of experience) to assist the National Organizing Director and help develop and implement multi-state federal issue advocacy programs -across a number of key states. With guidance from the National Organizing Director, the Deputy Organizing Director will:
• Organize the organizers overseeing state-based coalition partners working to win commitments from targets and build support for federal climate action in key states through earned media, grasstop cultivation, coalition building, meetings with federal lawmakers, grassroots activation and other strategies and tactics.
• Manage a large portfolio of states and targets to ensure goals are met and appropriately tracked and reported.
• Manage the State Operations and the additional program financials (MOUs, grants, expenditure tracking, etc.). Provide strategic guidance on how to run winning campaigns to other teams and departments within the Climate Action Campaign as needed.
• Assist in developing state and target-specific strategies, which includes tracking targets, drafting plans and concept memos, participating in regular planning calls/meetings, providing guidance to in-state partners, working with appropriate members of the government affairs team, and tracking policymaker actions.
• Review partner grant deliverables and report on field activities to internal and external national coalition stakeholders. (Through written highlights, verbal reports, and monthly progress to goal reports, etc.).
• Assist with the management of the department’s budget.

The Campaign serves as an important center of gravity and convening body for dozens of organizations working together to win the passage of ambitious federal climate policy that is centered on investment, standards, jobs, health, and justice. Qualifications & Requirements
Who You Are
A successful candidate for this position is a mission-driven, hardworking, but fun-loving “people person” and organizer who:
• Has 5-7 years of relevant experience in either issue advocacy, community organizing, volunteer management, political strategy, or electoral campaigns; with some of that experience in a leadership role.
• Is flexible, adaptable, self-motivated, and can prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Is an excellent communicator with strong writing and analytical skills.
• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google App equivalents, database/spreadsheet functions.
• Has database or CRM experience (e.g. QuickBase, VAN, Salesforce, etc.).
• Experience with SharePoint or other team based platforms and video conference software (e.g. Zoom, UberConference, etc.).
• Thrives in a collaborative team environment – and is above all, a team player – but can also work independently with minimal supervision.
• Proven ability to develop appropriate goals, strategies, and tactics to win support from congressional targets.
• Creative approach to planning and problem solving.
• Strong time management and priority-setting skills.
• Proven ability to help train staff and hold others accountable to goals.
• Has a positive attitude and a sense of humor.
• High degree of professionalism and cultural competency when dealing with diverse groups of people.
• Ability to react with appropriate levels of urgency to situations and events that require quick response or turn-around.
• Must have the ability to communicate, build and maintain collaborative relationships.
• Familiarity with environmental issues is a plus but not required.

The Process
Successful applicants will receive a phone screen conducted by staff of The Griffin Partnership. The next round of interviews will involve a virtual interview (over Zoom) with members of the Climate Action Campaign Hiring Team. After that interview, finalists will be asked to complete a skills-based exercise. There may be another interview before a successful applicant is chosen. This hiring process is on a fast track and applications may only be accepted for a limited period of time. We hope to have someone start the beginning of July or sooner.

The Fine Print
This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC, though our teams are currently working from home due to COVID-19. Travel may be required to field states 2-3 days, per quarter once it’s safe to travel.

The target salary for this position is $70,000 depending on experience. We offer an excellent benefits package which includes 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, and a 401k plan.
