Mountain Association Seeks Equity Outreach Specialist


Overview


The Mountain Association is looking for a highly motivated individual to join its Strategic Initiatives Team as an Equity Outreach Specialist. The Equity Outreach Specialist leads the effort to ensure that the Mountain Association achieves its strategic goal of providing services more equitably in Eastern Kentucky through building relationships with underserved and under-represented groups, identifying unmet needs or gaps in services, tracking progress on impact goals, and supporting Mountain Association teams in the development and implementation of programs and services.


Background


The Mountain Association invests in people and places in Eastern Kentucky to advance a just transition to a new economy that is more diverse, sustainable, equitable and resilient. Our Lending team offers loans to existing and startup businesses and organizations. We are a Community Development Financial Institution and a non-profit, so we can offer greater flexibility and lend to those who may not otherwise qualify. Our Business Support program connects business owners and nonprofit leaders to consultants who can help them succeed. Our Energy experts help businesses, nonprofits, public agencies and homeowners find much-needed energy savings through utility bill analysis, on-site energy efficiency and solar assessments, financing and grant application support. 


The Mountain Association also engages in research, communications and advocacy for policy and narrative change, and works with partners on a variety of projects to demonstrate what’s possible in Eastern Kentucky. 


Position Description


Summary: The Equity Outreach Specialist will lead the work to ensure that the Mountain Association achieves its strategic goal of providing services more equitably in Eastern Kentucky through building relationships with underserved and under-represented groups, identifying unmet needs or gaps in services, tracking progress on impact goals, and supporting Mountain Association teams in the development and implementation of programs and services.


Responsibilities: The Equity Outreach Specialist will have direct responsibility for the following:


Outreach


  • Develop and implement a plan to build relationships and partnerships with under-represented groups and other organizations working in the DEI space.
  • Identify gaps in the availability of energy, lending, and business support services.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic interventions to make Mountain Association services more accessible.
  • Identify the needs of underserved business owners and entrepreneurs (BIPOC, LGBTQ, women, those with disabilities, recent immigrants, etc).
  • Research strategies for a trauma-informed approach to supporting underserved business owners and nonprofit organizations.
  • Systems mapping – map the networks of support available to underserved entrepreneurs and communities.
  • Recruit consultants for the BSS program who represent underserved entrepreneurs and communities.

Measurement and evaluation


  • Implement a system for measuring the impact of the Equity Outreach work in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer and program teams.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of an evaluation of the DEI work in preparation for the next strategic planning process, which will begin in 2024. 

Support Mountain Association DEI Efforts


  • Serve as a member of the Equity Team
  • Work with Mountain Association teams to design and implement programs and services to address needs identified in the region.

  • Represent the Mountain Association in Appalachian and Just Transition networks regionally and nationally as assigned and cultivate new strategic connections. 
  • Represent the Mountain Association at events, conferences, meetings, speaking engagements and elsewhere as appropriate. 

Support Program Communications Efforts as needed

Minimum Qualifications and Characteristics


Knowledge and experience: Commitment to sustainable development, and to economic, environmental and social justice; two to four years of work experience in diversity/equity/inclusion programs, outreach, public relations, economic development, and/or advocacy; four-year college degree or demonstrated work success in a related position(s);broad knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion; understanding of Central Appalachian culture, context and history; able to work successfully on a team with diverse members.


Personal characteristics: Highly self-motivated; creative; commitment to strategic thinking and innovative action; ability to both lead and collaborate effectively; well-organized, attentive to detail, and able to work on multiple projects at once; keen sense of humor!


Technology and software: Strong computer skills 


Communications: Strong writing skills; strong interpersonal communication skills.


Physical: Close vision with or without corrective lenses necessary for computer work; manual dexterity needed to operate computer; ability to perform assigned duties in a time-efficient manner; valid driver’s license and ability to drive. Either insurability on Mountain Association’s group vehicle policy or access to a reliable vehicle for regular trips. Preferred Qualifications and Characteristics


Experience working in nonprofit organizations and in DEI efforts; Bi-lingual (Spanish); knowledge of the Central Appalachian region and Kentucky; knowledge of economic development and development finance; knowledge of data management systems.
