Johns Manville in Spartanburg, SC is currently seeking a Process Engineer to join our team! In our Spartanburg plant we produce a variety of polyester reinforcement, filtration and specialty fabrics using JM-proprietary Spunbond technology. As an internal supplier to JM's Roofing Systems Group and several other commercial roofing manufacturers, product lines can be found as a reinforcement in modified bitumen roofing applications worldwide. The plant has three active production lines, is registered under the ISO-9001:2008 quality standards and operates on a 24/7 schedule with approximately 100 JM employees.
The Process Engineer role will assist with the operation of the plant assets and recommend settings and targets for line conditions. Including, the implementation of technical knowledge to meet targets regarding output, usage of material(s) and energy while meeting the product specifications.
To achieve the goals, the Process Engineer will use data collection, auditing and preventive maintenance which allows the ability to identify deviations quickly and implement corrective measures. Comprehensive evaluations of asset performance issues evaluated and supported. Based on performance analysis, raw material specifications will be reviewed on a regular frequency and potentially adjusted to drive the expected performance improvement.
Ongoing development of process understanding, and future technology will also be a fundamental responsibility of this position. Emphasis on safety and environmental compliance are important in our work environment. This position will be involved with continuous improvements within the Spartanburg facility in areas of customer resolution, product quality, process capability, product cost reduction, and new technology identification and implementation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Includes the following and other duties as assigned.
Work with the Process Engineering/Technical Team to implement process changes, conduct trials, and provide new product scale-up support.
Evaluate processes and programs to improve product quality, process capability, reduce cost, and ensure employee safety.
Conduct formal root cause and corrective actions on quality complaints and process issues.
Resource for engineering for optimization and troubleshooting the manufacturing process.
Assist with project management and oversight for all aspects and phases for multiple project assignments concurrently and drives projects or subprojects to completion.
Maintain effective communication to management and project customers regarding project status, problems, and changes.
Works proactively with process engineers, production, and maintenance departments to understand and solve process and equipment issues, and to identify improvement opportunities based on joint performance reviews with coworkers.
Train and develop employees to provide operational responsiveness and increase operator technical knowledge.
Plans own work assignments with general instructions, recommends own prioritization, assumes responsibility for small definable projects.
Consistently delivers successful budgets/projects with limited/medium complexity <$2M.
Exercises discretion within established guidelines to select method of work to meet defined schedules and outcomes.
Contribute to achieve AOP targets on assets/define projects.
Provide technical support to a 24/7 continuous process operation.
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field.
Entry level to 3 years of relevant experience.
Candidate should have a desire to grow and develop towards operations, superintendent or other management roles within a manufacturing plant.
Exposure to manufacturing facility safety and quality programs.
Experience in data analysis and computer applications systems
Proven ability to identify opportunities and execute improvements.
Solid communication skills, both written and verbal.
Proficient in computer applications and data analysis.
Ability to meet aggressive program deliverables and work in a cross-functional team environment.
Ability to occasionally travel (domestic and international) for training and business support.
Strong technical and administrative skills
Ability to pass a pre-employment physical exam
Ability to work with extended hours as necessary to complete work assignments
Six Sigma/Lean/SPC experience, Greenbelt/Blackbelt certification.
Experience in polymer science or textile manufacturing.
