Under minimal supervision, use fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization to perform complex scientific research.
This position will assist in the conduct of community research projects including in the areas of identifying factors associated with not receiving COVID-19 vaccination, and implementing and evaluating interventions to improve COVID vaccine uptake in racial minority communities in Milwaukee. The position will also involve HIV prevention research for racial minority gay or bisexual men. The employee will identify community settings for reaching research populations and then will recruit, interview, administer informed consent, and assist in facilitating focus group and intervention sessions. Additional activities include the conduct of assessments and activities with participants following research protocols. For projects involving behavioral interventions, the employee will also conduct individual, small-group, and/or community interventions following protocol. These will be focused on inner-city racial minority community populations, and will include projects to understand and address COVID vaccination concerns and also HIV prevention.
Identify and interact with community organizations/venues/settings in order to recruit participants, and carry out study activities. Communities include racial minority and LGBTQ communities in southeastern Wisconsin.
Interact effectively with members of study populations including persons of diverse racial backgrounds. This communication may be face to face, but currently conducted primarily over the phone, video calls/conferences, and/or through other forms of electronic communication.
Recruit and screen participants, explain study procedures to participants, administer informed consent.
Conduct research activities with participants according to protocol. These activities may include, for example: conducting computer-assisted assessments, providing a technology assistance intervention, surveys, conducting structured interviews, focus groups, field observations, and providing individual case management, and group intervention sessions to participants according to study protocols.
Provide participants with educational, counseling, and/or other risk reduction components following the study protocol.
Distribute participant incentives according to established protocol.
Maintain project documentation and records, including participant data and locator information. Assist in data storage, data coding, and participant reminders. May assist in the transcription, coding, and analysis of qualitative interviews and focus groups.
Assist in leading COVID-19 or HIV treatment engagement, prevention and other individual or group intervention sessions following the study protocol.
Foster and maintain professional working relations with representatives of the community, including community-based organizations, public health or AIDS service organizations, healthcare providers, and current and former participants.
Participate in research team meetings, training sessions, and research planning sessions, as well as meetings with faculty, scientists, coordinators, and administrators.
Represent the project at community meetings as needed.
Assist in the preparation of scientific reports and manuscripts as needed.
Position may require travel to/from sites where research is being conducted. May include local, out-of-state, national, and/or international travel. Valid drivers’ license preferred. All travel is conducted in accord with institutional, public health, and funder policy.
Other duties as assigned. These duties may include working on other current or future HIV prevention and treatment projects and/or working concurrently on several projects.
Knowledge – Skills – Abilities
Experience in community health or community development programs undertaken in inner-city settings, with knowledge of agencies, programs, and community venues that reach underserved racial minority community members. Must meet ethical standards of conduct of research with human participants, possess excellent communication skills, and be comfortable discussing topics related to COVID-19 vaccination, HIV, human sexuality, drug/alcohol use, mental illness, immigration status, etc. Must have the ability to work independently as well as work as part of a research team. Ability to understand and follow research protocols. Must have sensitivity to diversity issues and be able to work professionally with multicultural community populations, organizations, and co-workers. Knowledge of and ability to uphold standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and scientific conduct are absolutely essential. Prior experience working and/or volunteering with research population strongly preferred. Computer and technical skills essential (word processing, email, internet, text messaging, video conferencing, medical record and other health apps for smartphones/tablets, ability to follow detailed instructions to save and secure research data). Experience with use of social media helpful.
This position may involve travel to areas and communities both within and outside of Wisconsin where at-risk populations reside and/or receive services. A valid driver’s license and insurability are preferred.

Minimum Required Education: Undergraduate degree in psychology, social work, or related field.
Minimum Required Experience: 3 years’ experience in community, healthcare, or social service settings working with diverse populations. Prior formal or informal experience with target populations strongly desired.
Preferred Education: Master’s degree
Preferred Experience: Experience in the conduct of behavioral research or in public health
