The Center for Geospace Studies at SRI International is seeking an enthusiastic Research Engineer to join our team. This person will support ongoing operations and maintenance of incoherent scatter radars, contribute to basic-science efforts using incoherent scatter radar data, and collaborate on other research efforts related to geospace science. The position can either be located at SRI International’s Menlo Park, California headquarters or be remote in the U.S.
SRI International is an independent nonprofit research organization, and The Center for Geospace Studies (CGS) is part of the Space & Survivability Lab within the Advanced Technology and Systems Division at SRI. CGS has a long history of research in upper atmospheric and ionospheric science using incoherent scatter radars and other instruments. The Advanced Modular Incoherent Scatter Radars (AMISR) were designed by SRI specifically for the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support ionospheric research. These were the first electronically steerable phased array radars built for NSF-sponsored basic research.
The ongoing AMISR project supports the operations and maintenance of the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR), and the Resolute Bay Incoherent Scatter Radar North (RISR-N), which have been in operation since 2007 and 2009, respectively. The AMISR program has contributed to over 250 science publications, and AMISR data continues to play an important role in the geospace research community. In addition to the AMISR program, CGS conducts a variety of basic and applied research programs related to the geospace environment and its effects on technological systems.
In this role, the Research Engineer will be expected to:
Aid researchers and students in the scientific use and interpretation of incoherent scatter radar data, including performing custom analysis and reprocessing of past experiments.
Maintain and improve software and databases used for processing and distribution of incoherent scatter radar data.
Develop improved signal processing and estimation algorithms for analysis of incoherent scatter radar data.
Support the AMISR engineering team in the operations and maintenance of the AMISR radars.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary staff and contribute to group projects within lab.
Develop new ideas for future scientific proposals.
The successful candidate will be creative, self-motivated, demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and work well in a team.
Ph. D. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Atmospheric Science, or a related discipline with 0-2 years of post-graduate experience.
Higher levels of relevant experience with demonstrated independent work or task leadership skills will also be considered.
Demonstrated computer and programming skills using Python, C, FORTRAN, command-line utilities, shell scripts, and git version control software.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
Experience managing large relational databases, websites, or Linux servers is a plus.
Prior familiarity with incoherent scatter radar data, other kinds of radar signal processing, or space plasma physics is a plus.
Limited travel required.
For Colorado residents, the salary range is: $81,576 - $168,250
