The Director of First Year Experience, reporting to the Associate Dean in the Student Academic Affairs Office, is primarily responsible for: leading the design and implementation of the collegeís programming for new studentsí transition and connection to college to support their first year success and retention.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support the Transition and Success of New Students

Offer, design and re-design programs and courses that facilitate the transition of new students to the college and campus, including LAS 101, service projects, wellness activities, and programs abroad
Offer cohort building experiences to admitted and pre-enrolled students
Monitor academic progress of new students and determine course of action if interventions needed
Meet with and advise new students to support their transition and orientation
Serves as college specialist for all first year programming, and collaborates with staff that offer first year experiences to special cohorts, including Access and Achievement Program, LAS James Scholar program and LAS International Programs
Collaborates with campus partners and the Associate Dean to create the LAS First Year Experience Survey and takes lead on reporting findings and implementing programmatic changes as needed
Leads recruitment and training of undergraduate interns who facilitate sections of LAS 101, 102

Serve as Lead Instructor for LAS 399

Offer and teach a course that prepares undergraduate interns in their leadership skill, knowledge of the college values and priorities, knowledge of student development and campus resources to leading sections of LAS 101 and LAS 102, orientation and transition courses for new students
Hires, trains and supervises graduate students who teach sections of LAS 399

SAAO Shared Duties

Serves on SAAO Leadership Team to inform strategic planning, decision-making
Participate in scholarship award selection
Participate on committees as directed by the Director or Associate Dean and also in general college advisor service, including walk-in advising duty rotation, end-of-term academic progress review and recruitment.

LAS Life + Career Design Team

Collaborates on the SAAO Life + Career Design initiative, particularly as it relates to developing the skills and mindsets for successful first year transitions.
Qualifications & Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS



Required:

Masterís degree. Four years experience advising, teaching, counseling or related work with college students in academic context. Experience in orienting and guiding college-age students through life transitions. Experience in supervision.



Preferred:

Degree in liberal arts and sciences field. Formal studies in undergraduate education, student development or academic affairs. Demonstrated effective experience in working with new college student orientation and transitions. Experience in administration of first year experience programs. Experience in teaching college orientation and transition courses or preparing others to teach transitions course. Evidence of participation in college student first year experience organizations or related professional development. Experience in service learning and/or leadership training development. Experience in developing innovative approaches to teaching, advising and supporting new college students, including students from diverse backgrounds and cultures and first generation students. Experience using design-thinking mindsets and methods for life mapping and creative problem-solving. Experience in project or large course management. Record of successful experience in program development, implementation, assessment. Experience in recruitment of college-age students.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
