Manager 1: Guidance, Navigation, & Controls (GNC) Analysis or Hardware - Space / Satellite Systems (Dulles, VA)

We have an opening for a GNC Manager 1: Analysis/Hardware to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Tactical Space organization. This position will be located in Dulles, VA.
In this role, you will serve as an Engineering Functional Manager and manage a department of GNC Analysts. You will be responsible for leading the technical performance of an engineering team dedicated to developing GNC solutions.

You will be expected to be very knowledgeable in GNC guidance and navigation systems. Responsibilities include:
  • Providing technical and strategic direction
  • Coordination of assignments
  • Hiring of new staff
  • Networking with Program Office and key stakeholders to identify opportunities and issues where the department needs to prioritize resources to address business demands
  • Pursue research and development efforts to improve the organization's products, tools, and processes
To be successful in this role you should clearly demonstrate strong leadership skills and have a track record as an effective communicator and problem solver. You should be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, having the ability to operate in a team environment and collaborate across the sector business areas as required to accomplish team and department goals.

You will support a group of ~20 entry level engineers and interns

Specific management responsibilities include:
  • Recruiting and retention. Hiring to meet growing demands and back-fill positions as required
  • Training, mentoring, and coaching. Mentoring staff on both technical and soft skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Career guidance, goal setting, and performance evaluations
  • Compensation evaluations and coordination
  • Policy dissemination
  • Workload planning/forecasting
  • Developing advanced techniques for solving guidance and navigation problems
  • Promoting improvement tools to sustain and advance organizational expertise
  • Interact internally with engineering team and/or with suppliers, vendors, or customers for basic problem resolution
  • Participate in the development of new business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities
In addition to management responsibilities, technical responsibilities include:
  • Design, analyze, and tune spacecraft attitude and position control loops using time and frequency domain techniques
  • Design, analyze, and tune sequential filters (e.g. Kalman filters) for attitude determination and relative navigation
  • Design, develop, test, and verify flight algorithms for the GNC subsystem and support flight software qualification testing
  • Develop and test GNC Simulation and Spacecraft Flight Software using C/C++ and MATLAB/Simulink
  • Analyze and test the spacecraft GNC subsystem performance using simulations and other analytic tools
  • Perform analysis to support early design phase concept development including actuator sizing and placement, sensor selection and placement, attitude and position guidance, rendezvous, proximity operations and docking analyses, and predicted performance assessments
  • Develop simulation models for sensors (e.g. star tracker, rate gyro, accelerometer, GPS, magnetometer, sun sensors), actuators (e.g. reaction wheel, torque bar, thruster, CMG), system dynamics (e.g. rigid body, multi-body, orbit mechanics, flexible models, propellant slosh), and the space environment (e.g. atmospheric, solar radiation pressure, third-body gravity, geopotential)
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline
  • At least 5 years of related experience in Guidance, Navigation, & Controls Analysis or related engineering
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or PhD
  • Experience managing a GNC functional department or group
  • At least 9 years of direct related experience in Guidance, Navigation, & Controls engineering or related engineering.
  • Ability to effectively motivate people to work as an integrated team across locations, companies and cultures
  • Active DoD Top Secret and Special Access Program clearance

Salary Range: $143,500 USD - $215,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
