Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Scientist to join the Photon Science (PS, https://als.lbl.gov/science/photon-science-programs/) Group as a member of its Dichroism Program (https://als.lbl.gov/science/photon-science-programs/dichroism-program/).
In this role, you will perform independent and collaborative research at an x-ray beamline that hosts an external user program and features multiple endstations for soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and scattering experiments. You will specialize in one of three techniques using soft x-rays: absorption spectroscopy; resonant diffraction or reflectometry; or magnetization dynamics using ferromagnetic resonance, and work as part of a group under the supervision of an experienced ALS scientist. The position may be filled at level 1 (Research Scientist) or level 3 (Staff Scientist) and will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. What You Will Do:
• Share responsibility for safely operating, maintaining, and developing the capabilities of the soft x-ray Beamline 4.0.2.
• Jointly support the external user program of the beamline.
• Cultivate your research program that uses and expands the resources of the ALS.
• Develop novel x-ray instruments and characterization techniques that enable cutting-edge research; develop software and methods for analyzing experimental data.
• Work with other members of the PS Dichroism Program to define and pursue strategic goals that drive innovation and foster team science in a diverse and inclusive workplace.
• Interact with a vibrant scientific and technical community at LBNL and its visiting researchers to explore solutions to Grand Challenges, as set by DOE Basic Energy Sciences and other funding agencies.
• Document your work, publish your results in peer reviewed scientific and technical journals, and present your findings at domestic/international workshops and conferences.
• [Level 3: Staff Scientist] – Pursue internal and external funding for research and development projects; potential to supervise other ALS scientists; design and lead successful scientific and technical innovations that benefit the ALS and its community.

What is Required:
• Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the physical sciences, materials science, or engineering.
• Demonstrated ability to initiate and drive projects in an interactive team setting, including the ability to manage competing priorities, and provide quality work on schedule.
• Demonstrated scientific publication record.
• Understanding of soft x-ray techniques; demonstrated experience in the operation of complex research equipment.
• Well developed analytical and quantitative skills.
• Demonstrated ability to teach effective and safe operation of scientific instruments.
• Ability to work with and maintain effective professional relationships with scientific staff, technical staff, and with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Proven excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Strong technical and scientific communication skills, both oral and written.
• Flexibility to perform other duties as assigned/needed.

• Experience with spectroscopy, spectromicroscopy, resonant diffraction, or ferromagnetic resonance techniques and their applications in magnetism, correlated electronic materials, and other ordered materials.
• Experience in other experimental or theoretical techniques used in a relevant research area, such as magnetometry, charge/spin transport, ferromagnetic resonance, thin film deposition or crystal growth, etc.
• Basic experience in scripting or programming for data analysis.
• Two or more years of experience working with soft x-ray beamlines and endstations.
