This is an exciting opportunity to provide vision, innovation, and leadership to a prestigious Pharmacology Department that is routinely ranked in the top 25 in Blue Ridge Rankings. The Department has considerable strength in multiple areas of biomedical research with a focus on the neuronal systems contributing to psychiatric diseases at behavioral, molecular, and genetic levels. The Chair of Pharmacology will work closely with the Department and School of Medicine, leadership, faculty, and staff, to advance overall research, academic and administrative activities.

The Opportunity
The Chair will maintain and enhance the success that the department has experienced over the past decade while driving innovation in the basic and translational science more broadly.

The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will possess exceptional communication skills, strong financial acumen, a demonstrable record of promoting diversity in science among trainees, staff and faculty and a sincere commitment to promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and inclusion across the Health Science campus. Qualified candidates must hold a terminal degree in a biomedical science and/or an MD degree and will be an outstanding leader and scientist, widely recognized in the field with a strong track record of funded, impactful research. He/she must be a respected leader who is operationally savvy, highly knowledgeable of cutting-edge science, and a visionary leader in the new age of biochemical and molecular science.

The Organization
UTHSCSA is a comprehensive academic health university and research center in South Texas. One of five health institutions in The University of Texas System, UTHSCSA is the primary source of health professions, education and life sciences research in the region and is a major center for patient care.

The Pharmacology Department is home for the Center for Biomedical Neuroscience (CBN) and the Addiction Research, Treatment & Training Center of Excellence (ARTT). The CBN serves to coordinate diverse neuroscience research and training across the institution. Each of these Centers has a T32 training grant and are part of robust programs dedicated to training the next generation of biomedical scientists. The ARTT is a Center of Excellence dedicated to the promotion of addiction research, treatment, and training and facilitating the translation of discoveries in basic science to clinical care. The faculty also have expertise in pain research, cancer drug discovery, aging, and metabolic diseases. Investigating the cognitive effects of cancer therapies, research at the intersection of neuroscience and cancer is a new emphasis in the department. The faculty have close ties with their clinical colleagues in the Long School of Medicine to facilitate translational investigations.

San Antonio enjoys a cost of living that is consistently ranked among the lowest of major U.S. cities. There are 13 public school districts across the metropolitan area, along with several of the nation’s highest ranked private schools. The city also is home to dozens of private and public colleges and universities. There are over 80 miles of greenways and trailways accessible from all parts of the city and extensively used. Rivers and lakes in the Texas Hill Country, which form an arc around the northern edge of San Antonio, provide venues for canoeing, tubing, and white-water rafting. Area lakes attract fishermen, as well as water skiing and sailing enthusiasts.
