The Miami Project at the University of Miami, Miller school of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Research Associate 3. The Research Associate 3, SOM assumes responsibility for the design and performance of research focused on the development of novel experimental therapies for human malignancies. The incumbent contributes to collaborations with scientists within the University of Miami or elsewhere. Moreover, this individual works as part of a team and assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, protocols, and supplies.
Maintains daily operations and performs procedures related to new and on-going research projects.
Assists with ordering, purchasing, and maintenance of all required reagents and supplies for laboratory activities, and monitors and maintains inventory of supplies and stocks.
Assists with the maintenance of institutional biosafety and animal care protocols, laboratory safety records, and standard operating procedures.
Performs and assists other research staff with standard laboratory techniques.
Develops, adapts, and implements new laboratory procedures.
Records, organizes, and writes up experimental results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations.
Keeps abreast of latest literature in the field and searches for references to technical problems.
Maintains current knowledge of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Employ a strong working knowledge of Neuroscience (Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry is acceptable but Neuroscience preferred) in performing and interpreting experiments.
Manage lab areas and prepare inspection reports, perform ordering and compliance paperwork.
Responsible for undertaking experiments on small animals and performing histological and behavioral tasks for the advancement of research projects in collaboration with other laboratory staff as well as the organization of laboratory data and resources (paper and electronic).
Organize and present data to laboratory peers, using knowledge from read literature to make effective summaries, propose follow-on experiments and answer questions.
Perform procedures and analysis associated with histological and behavioral assessment of animals following spinal cord injury including, animal surgeries (laminectomy, tracing, cell transplantation), animal post-operative care, animal perfusion and tissue dissection, tissue sectioning and staining, behavioral measurement of sensory and motor function as well as fluorescent and confocal microscopy and tissue culture.
Maintain an electronic repository of datasheets, ACUC/IBC protocols, chore lists and laboratory resources in Sharepoint to be readily available to the supervisor and other staff when needed.
Perform biochemistry, immunochemistry and molecular biology techniques including cell and tissue staining, western blotting, gel electrophoresis and ELISA.
Carry out cell culture of cell lines and primary cells, perform viral vector infections and plasmid transfections and employ cell-based assays of cell death, axon growth, axon myelination and cell migration.
Be able to manage transgenic mouse colonies, perform genotyping and coordinate breeding programs for the mice.
Assist in the writing of manuscripts and grant reports. Analyze data from experiments and coordinate the management of multiple studies.
The position will require after hours and weekend work with animal care and management.

Bachelorís Degree in relevant field required
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
