Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program Instructor

Camp is seeking a registered professional nurse to assume responsibly for planning, teaching, and evaluating students in the clinical area. The instructor shares in the responsibility of providing quality instruction for the students. Faculty will be provide educational instruction for the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students in the classroom, clinical, and lab setting, while meeting specific learning needs, dependent upon the students’ educational semester. The faculty will be responsible for all classroom content, assist with lab and skills settings, and provide modules and orientation related to the assigned clinical facility. The faculty must ensure a positive, professional representation of the nursing profession and college at all times, while maintaining a supportive role for the students.

Contribute to all activities related to the mission of the College and the Program. Demonstrate concern and dedication to the education of the students. Maintain and exhibit mastery of his/her area of teaching expertise. Assist in the process of student counseling and advisement. Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating the curricula leading to an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Nursing. Effectively use a variety of teaching/learning strategies to promote a spirit of inquiry and to stimulate student learning. Ensure that the student progresses towards graduation in a timely manner by registering for appropriate sequences of courses each semester. Ensure that student folders are kept current and complete with required clinical documentation. Counsel students regarding their academic progress. Assist students in academic achievement through support, referral and tutoring. Have the same responsibilities and duties as clinical adjunct when assignment includes clinicals. Hold membership and participate in professional organizations through involvement on the local, state, and/or national levels. Pursue professional and scholarly activities through research, publications, and attendance and/or presentations at professional societies or groups. Provide assistance and/or act as consultant to educational or other agencies. Advance expertise through additional study in areas of specialization. Maintain an active role in nursing program and college activities through individual participation in committee activities and College-sponsored events. Support the growth of the College through both formal and informal student recruitment and retention activities. Support the standards of the College through the implementation of effective teaching focused on guiding the student towards promotion and graduation. Foster student socialization through incorporation of the mission of the College, the nursing program mission and philosophy, individual instruction and personal guidance. Must maintain compliance with all clinical and VCCS requirements. Use personal and professional abilities through participation in public service activities that promote the wellbeing of individuals and groups within the service region of the College, the state, and the nation.

Clinical Duties & Responsibilities:

Meet all clinical partner requirements. Become familiar with the philosophy, objectives, and policies of the nursing program and the Nursing Student Handbook. Confer with the Lead Instructor/program dean regarding clinical rotation plan, assigned clinical agencies, and assigned group of students. Plan a faculty orientation day with the assigned agency personnel and spend designated time on the assigned unit as necessary. Each agency has specific requirements. Plan student orientation to the clinical area according to agency policy. Select patient assignments and learning experiences according to classroom instruction and the student needs; give to the student the day prior to the clinical experience when available. Review the clinical objectives with the student. Conduct pre- and post-clinical conferences. Assist students in the integration and reinforcement of learning by relating knowledge and skills of nursing and other disciplines to the learning experiences of the clinical setting. Provide supervision and guidance for the student using components of the nursing process with the assigned patient. Serve as a role model and resource person. Be accessible to students at all times in clinical. Review, correct, and comment on care plans and other written assignments required for clinical experiences and return to students by the following week. Evaluate and record student progress and confer at the end of each rotation and midterm in terms of strengths and areas where improvement is needed; an evaluation is written on the designated form. Maintain a climate conducive to learning. Establish and maintain cooperative relationship with staff and personnel of clinical agencies. Maintain a record of student absences from clinical and report it to the Lead Faculty/program dean. Report to the Lead Faculty/program dean any student problems/concerns that may occur in the clinical setting; record on the Student Evaluation Form, date, sign name, and have student date and sign name. Assist with teaching skills in the campus Skills Laboratory. Additional duties as assigned.

Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia. Campuses are located in Franklin and Suffolk. There also is a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates In transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services and training for businesses and industries; special interest classes for the community; and summer classes for youth through the Regional Workforce Development Center. A dual enrollment program for high school students, online courses, and developmental studies classes are available at the college as well.

This is a full-time nine month teaching position.

Rank and Salary: Rank and salary dependent on academic credentials and work experience.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

A valid, active, and currently unencumbered Registered Nursing License in Virginia or Compact State. Graduate degree required, MSN preferred. A minimum of two (2) years’ full-time work experience in the field. Ability to work well with nursing faculty and students to facilitate learning. Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of instruction and engage in a positive academic environment to support students with varying academic and other needs for support. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students and other college stakeholders. Experience with clinical simulation use in nursing education or willingness to learn. Current CPR (BLS for healthcare providers) and documentation of all routine healthcare employee immunizations. Flexible schedule; ability to travel to both campuses and various hospitals. Official transcripts will be required prior to final offer. Must complete a minimum of 30 hours of CE every two years. Must be able to meet all clinical partner requirements.

Preferred Qualifications: Specialty certification. Recent acute care experience. Teaching and/or preceptorship experience.
