Research Engineer - Emerging Technologies
General Summary
GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research and development and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for a Research Engineer in our Building Energy Efficiency group to identify, evaluate and develop new energy-related technologies. You will conduct pilot studies, laboratory evaluations, and technical, economic and market assessments of new and emerging technologies for commercial buildings. The technology focus will include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), water heating, distributed power generation, and/or integrated energy systems that optimize the use of natural gas, electrical and/or renewables. In this role, you will be the principal investigator or project manager on multiple projects, support strategic organizational goals, and establish or expand your technical expertise along with an awareness of relevant economics and markets. This role also involves collaborating with researchers from utilities, private industry, standards organizations, government agencies, universities, and national laboratories

Primary Responsibilities
• Evaluate new or emerging technologies based on measured energy savings, carbon emissions, lifecycle costs, and non-economic benefits with a focus on commercial buildings.
• Develop field test plans and work with project teams to design and install instrumentation and data acquisition systems to quantify installed performance.
• Use software tools to analyze data, summarize results, and report findings.
• Demonstrate technical expertise with strong written and presentation skills.
• Develop new project ideas and proposals.
• Work effectively in small teams and independently.
• Understand and comply with all safety protocols in field or laboratory settings.
• Occasional travel to field sites or industry events.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
• Hands-on skills in a laboratory or field environment, previous experience with data acquisition, instrumentation and controls, electronics, or programming is a plus.
• Familiarity with the design and testing of building energy systems (HVAC, water heating, electrical, building envelope) and related codes & standards is also plus.
• Fundamental knowledge in areas such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, energy conversion, combustion, or psychometrics.
• Communication and technical writing skills and ability to convey information to both technical and general audiences
• Demonstrate that internal and external customers are a high priority.
• Project management experience is valued, but not required.

Education and Experience
• Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline; relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED AP, CEM, etc.)
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience desired and an advanced degree in an engineering field
• While your past professional experience in these areas is highly valued, your personal interests, enthusiasm, and ability to learn is critical for success in this role. All candidates with the appropriate skill sets will be considered.
