POSITION HIGHLIGHTS This is a full time (35 hours per week) position with Monday through Friday schedule. This role is based in Hartford, CT and will include statewide travel to conduct field work. OUR MISSION The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is charged with conserving, improving and protecting the natural resources and the environment of the state of Connecticut as well as making cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy available for the people and businesses of the state. YOUR ROLE The EP Radiation Control Physicist role operates within in the Radiation Division of DEEP's Bureau of Air Management. The Radiation Division ensures the safe and secure possession, use, storage, transportation and disposal of radioactive material and radiation producing machinery. It's the responsibility for the Radiation Division to inspect facilities that use radioactive material, x-ray machines and other radiation producing devices. The Division is responsible for responding to reports of accidents and incidents involving radioactive materials, sampling and monitoring for build-up of radioactive material in the environment, and verification of adequate clean-up for sites that previously used radioactive materials. The unit participates in and conducts radiation emergency response training with nuclear facilities in the state and with other emergency response organizations. This role is responsible for: Independently performing specialized inspections and environmental studies where sources of ionizing radiation are used to evaluate compliance with state and federal regulations; Conducting inspections to ensure hospitals and outpatient facilities are using radioactive material in a manner that will protect the health and safety of workers, the general public and patients in accordance with the requirements of federal and Connecticut regulations; Performing radiation measurements as part of a field monitoring team and conducting assessment of the offsite consequences of radiological releases in support of the state’s Radiological Emergency Plan (REP) for nuclear facilities in the state; Drafting informal enforcement actions to those facilities that utilize ionizing radiation; Responding to allegations, incidents, and emergencies involving radioactive material; Conducting environmental sampling for build-up of radiation in air, water, or biota in the state; Participating in state, regional, and federal training and exercises to ensure preparedness for a radiological emergency; Other tasks as necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Six (6) years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and/or control of potential occupational or environmental health hazards involving the use, manufacture, possession, transportation or disposal of sources of ionizing or non-ionizing radiation or radioactive substances. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED 1. College training in radiation science, physics, physical science, biological science or nuclear engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree. 2. A Master's degree in radiation science, physics, physical science, biological science or nuclear engineering may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience with current State, Federal, and Interstate regulations and standards relating to ionizing radiation. Experience with use of radioactive material. Experience using instruments and equipment to detect and identify radioactive material and contamination. Experience working independently as well as part of a team. Experience in emergency response related to incidents involving radioactive material. Experience in the prediction and assessment of the potential consequences of radiological events and emergencies. Experience communicating risks of radiation to workers, patients, or members of the public. Contact Information
