Job Description
Assistant Computer Systems Administrator
The Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon is accepting applications for an Assistant Computer Systems Administrator, to be based in the Portland office. The position also provides support to branch offices in Eugene and Medford, OR. The Federal Public Defender provides quality defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts.

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Computer Systems Administrator provides in person and remote end user technical support for computer systems, hardware, and software to all FPD staff and clients. They diagnose and resolve technical issues while providing a high level of professionalism and strong personal interaction skills. They manage users accounts from creation through deletion using Active Directory and other tools. They will help onboard and offboard employees and perform periodic training on software and systems. They assist in the administration of the office IT infrastructure including all attached devices and maintain our inventory database.

The successful candidate will have a client service centered approach to support, be highly organized, capable of working in a team or on their own and be a self-starter. We are an office with a small IT department of 3 people and manage many of our own projects and tickets from start to finish. The main office, in Portland, includes approximately 70 staff with another 15 staff in the Eugene and Medford branches. The network is primarily Windows 10/Server but we also support, Linux, Android, and iOS. We have physical and virtualized machines. Our virtualization platform is vMware vSphere.

JOB DUTIES:
• Provide technical support and training for end-users on all devices including Windows desktops, laptops, iPhones, Android phones, iPads etc.
• Take part in periodic maintenance and changes to desktops, laptops, servers, storage and printers.
• Support and maintain printers and scanners.
• Help end users with video conference equipment setup and connections.
• Support MS Office 16/19 and O365, Adobe Acrobat DC/2017/2020, and a variety of other desktop applications.
• Desktop and laptop imaging and deployment.
• Research and recommend hardware and software
• Enterprise antivirus and antimalware support and maintenance
• Back-up and Recovery monitoring and maintenance.
• Asset and inventory tracking, auditing, and control.
• Develop and maintain local technical and user documentation for all assigned systems.
• Develop, document and maintain standard operation procedures for installed automation systems.
• Develop and maintain network documentation to include detailed diagrams of the network topology and all significant devices such as routers, switches, VLANs, servers
• Evaluate automated systems and existing software to determine use, performance, response times, adequacy, quality and available capacities.
• Participate in regular security audits and activities to ensure security posture meets or exceeds national standards.
• May participate in the financial and procurement process of the office as related to IT matters.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Some work outside normal working hours and on weekends for operations and maintenance. Travel to branch offices and training or conferences as required. Individual must also frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Starting salary is commensurate with experience and ranges from $61,275 to $96,248 (JSP 9 to JSP 12), based on experience, with scheduled step increases, and promotion potential up to JSP Grade 12, Step 10 (currently $115,519) The JSP or Judiciary Salary Plan is equivalent to the GS scale, and subject to the same annual Congressional increases. Current federal employees are subject to Grade and Step matching rules per Judiciary policy.

Compensation also includes 11 paid federal holidays, 13 paid sick days annually, and 13 paid vacation days annually (to start), health insurance, life insurance, retirement contribution, and the Thrift Savings Plan.

This is a full-time position with federal judiciary salary and benefits based on qualifications and experience relative to the General and Specialized Experience Requirements section of the Assistant Computer Systems Administrator position in the Defender Organization Classification System - DOCS. All offers of employment are contingent on the completion of a federal public trust-level background check.

Qualifications & Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• The knowledge, skills and abilities to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position.
• Two or more years specialized experience in help desk and network environment that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
• A minimum of 3 years of generally relevant work experience.
• Ability and desire to work well with a wide variety of end users with differing needs and experience.
• A demonstrated commitment to and comfort working with diverse communities and with clients from a range of backgrounds.
• A demonstrated interest in and/or commitment to indigent criminal defense.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelors’ degree in Computer Science, Systems Administration, or equivalent preferred and can be substituted for 1 year of Specialized Experience when determining pay rates.
• Microsoft, CompTia, Cisco, etc. certifications.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex problems in networks, computer hardware and computer operating systems in a friendly and efficient manner.
• Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, multi-task effectively and to participate cooperatively as part of a criminal defense team.
• Direct experience with Network and Systems Administration within a Windows Server environment
• Experience with law-office IT and litigation-support tools such as Trial Director, Magnet AXIOM, Eclipse, and Case Map.
