Job Description:

This is an in-house counsel position in the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, representing the Chancellor and the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. The attorney works under the supervision of the General Counsel, and will perform the following functions:

(1) conduct legal research;

(2) draft decisions on appeals of student unlawful discrimination claims;

(3) assist in the development and drafting of regulations;

(4) draft legal opinions;

(5) prepare bill analyses;

(6) review contracts and grants, and draft contract language;

(7) research and investigate community college compliance with minimum conditions; and (8) perform other duties as assigned.

The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on the Chancellor’s Office’s evolving telework policy. The Chancellor’s Office supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to the headquarters office in Sacramento if an urgent need arises.

The SOQ should include responses to the questions listed below. It should be no longer than two pages, single-spaced. 1.Please explain how your personal and legal experiences prepare you to represent the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, and the Chancellor’s Office, state regulatory entities that provide leadership and supervision over an open access system of higher education that serves more than 2 million Californians of all backgrounds.

2.Please describe why you are interested in joining the Office of General Counsel, and what professional expectations or aspirations you would have for your work with the California Community Colleges, should you be offered the position.
