Qualifications & Requirements
We value diverse backgrounds and perspectives. While we’ve outlined examples of experience that would be relevant to this role, we are open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds. If you believe you can excel in this role, we encourage you to apply.

This role will require you to have the following qualifications:

Commitment to and basic familiarity with WAI’s mission: A strong personal commitment to Wild Animal Initiative's mission and values.

Time and resource commitment: Willingness to dedicate time (5–10 hours per month) and personal resources (e.g., financial contributions and professional networks) to support the organization’s success over the next two-year period (the current duration of a single board term).

Commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles: Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring diverse perspectives are respected and systemic inequities are addressed in decision-making and board dynamics.

Critical decision-making and strategic thinking: Capacity for informed, data-driven decision-making and the ability to assess complex situations, identify risks such as funding shortfalls, and contribute to the organization’s long-term strategic goals.

Communication and advisory skills: Strong communication abilities, providing clear, strategic guidance and feedback while maintaining respect for staff autonomy. Engagement in constructive dialogue and proactive mitigation of concerns.

Fundraising: Experience in fundraising is helpful but not required. More important is your willingness to build and leverage networks on behalf of our organization. We commit to providing you with the necessary information, training, and tools to effectively represent our work and engage in fundraising activities.

Nonprofit governance and financial expertise: Experience in nonprofit governance and financial management, including fiduciary responsibilities, strategic oversight, budgeting, financial reporting, and investment and risk management. This experience is typically demonstrated through leadership roles in nonprofit or for-profit sectors, or consulting experience.

It would be beneficial in the role to have this qualification:
