Job Description
Digital Strategist
The New York City Council, an equal opportunity employer, is seeking a Digital Strategist to join its Communications Division. The Digital Strategist at the New York City Council is responsible for developing and executing digital tactics to employ compelling content and strategies across multiple media channels to advance the Council’s communications objectives.
The ideal candidate is a data driven and experienced digital communicator with an interest in translating public policy for digital audiences and a clear vision for how to use digital tools in support of strategic communications. A candidate with strong graphic design and video editing skills is highly preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Write engaging social media content in support of Council initiatives and laws with an ability to translate policy language and impacts for comprehension by broader audiences.
• Develop and implement effective digital communication strategies and tactics in support of Council priorities, the Speaker, committees, and members.
• Design visually engaging creative, including social media graphics, data visualizations, policy explainers, print materials and more.
• Create professional and sophisticated video content (including animation) for the Council’s social media channels.
• Execute social media requests promptly as needed, including after hours and for rapid response.
• Manage livestream and/or live social media coverage of Council hearings and press conferences on digital platforms.
• Work with the Digital Director and Digital team to develop digital communication plans each week.
• Track and analyze engagement across digital channels, reporting and utilizing findings to guide strategies and performance improvement.
• Monitor public policy debates on Council priorities to provide detailed insights into translating them for digital, and news outlets and social media for relevant articles and content ideas.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience, and at least 3 years of experience in communications or digital communications for an elected official, governmental organization, or advocacy,
labor or public affairs organization.
• Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical skills, and a deep commitment to learning.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work in a collaborative team setting and in partnership with diverse stakeholders.
• Creative problem-solver with the ability to address issues independently.
• Comfortable drafting copy for multiple platforms in a variety of voices.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro).
• Some experience with video editing and post-production preferred.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, while listening and learning from feedback.
• Ability to thrive in a busy, fast-paced, and time-pressured environment.
• High degree of familiarity with New York City, its government and the public affairs landscape.

New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.
