Laboratory Technician- Aviation Maintenance Technology Program

Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946, and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.

The Lab Technician for the Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program will support the delivery of hands-on training in the lab and shop environment. This individual will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and servicing mechanical equipment such as lathes, vertical milling machines, and other tools essential for aviation maintenance training. The technician will also play a key role in preparing and organizing class materials for lab and shop sessions, ensuring that both equipment and workspaces are clean, lubricated, and in optimal working condition to provide students with a safe and effective learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Operate and maintain mechanical equipment including lathes, vertical milling machines, drills, grinders, and other tools used in the AMT program.
• Prepare and organize materials for lab and shop classes, ensuring all necessary tools, parts, and equipment are available for each session.
• Perform regular cleaning, lubrication, and servicing of all mechanical equipment to ensure it remains in excellent working order.
• Monitor equipment usage and identify any necessary repairs or upgrades, coordinating with the program manager to ensure timely action.
• Assist instructors in setting up and supporting lab exercises, providing hands-on guidance to students when needed.
• Ensure all safety protocols and regulations are followed in the lab and shop areas, promoting a safe environment for both students and staff.
• Maintain an organized inventory of tools, parts, and materials, ensuring stock is well-maintained and readily accessible.
• Assist with the repair or modification of equipment when necessary and ensure all tasks are completed following safety standards.

KSA's/Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Proven experience with mechanical equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and other machinery typically used in an aviation maintenance setting
• Familiarity with safety procedures and regulations in a lab or shop setting
• Ability to work independently and maintain a clean, organized work environment
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, and students
• Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety standards
• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and troubleshooting techniques
• Willingness to learn concepts, equipment and software such as learning management systems as it relates to the courses and programs to be taught
• Ability and willingness to market the program to potential students of all ages and backgrounds
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs

Additional Considerations:
• Additional technical training in mechanical maintenance or a related field
• FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certification
• Experience in a community college setting
