Middle and Upper School Educator
Middle and Upper School Health Educator (Grades 6-12)

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as Middle and Upper School Health Educator (Grades 6-12).

Job Overview

An expert in their field, Chapin’s Health Educator is a primary supporter of Chapin’s emphasis on teaching the whole child, with health and wellness at the center of learning and preparing students for success outside of Chapin’s walls. Through dedicated time in the school day, the Middle and Upper School Health Educator promotes students’ abilities to make healthy decisions about their own lives. By ensuring high-quality, comprehensive health education that aligns with the National Health Education Standards, the Health Educator supports each student’s needs to make well-informed, independent choices in all aspects of their academic and extracurricular lives.

An integral member of both the Middle and Upper School Divisions, the Health Educator (Grades 6-12) will work in collaboration with the Class 4 and Class 5 Health Educators, with guidance from both the Upper and Middle School Division Heads, and under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Counseling Services.

The Middle and Upper School Health Educator (Grades 6-12) is responsible for:

Collaborating with Class 4 and Class 5 Health Educators in the planning and implementation of Middle School Health lessons

Teaching four sections of Class 6 and four sections of Class 7 Health lessons once per cycle

Curriculum planning and implementation of trimester-long Health lessons in Classes 8 and 9

Planning and implementation of workshop-style theme-based health classes 3-5x/year for each of grades 10, 11, and 12

Planning and overseeing the annual Upper School Life Skills Day

Guiding and advising US Health and Wellness student government committee (5 students in grades 8-12), including the planning and implementation of US Stress Less Weeks once per trimester

Serving as an Advisor in one division

Chapin’s next Middle and Upper School Health Educator (Grades 6-12) will be:

An expert in adolescent health and wellness who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development and who

Works across the Middle and Upper School divisions to implement a comprehensive, continuous, and expansive health education program that meets the National Health Education Standards

Collaborates with Physical Education and Athletics programs, Advisory programs, the Counseling Department, Nursing, and relevant administrative bodies to ensure consistent messaging, reduce overlap, and enhance current curricula

A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history who

Possesses a deep understanding of adolescent development and promotes student wellness by bridging the connection between emotional, social, and physical health and intellectual wellbeing

Establishes relationships with students through classroom teaching, presence at divisional activities and events, and through individual interactions

An educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by

Building relationships with students and faculty through involvement in the life of the school day such as through clubs and committees

Developing culturally responsive curriculum with respect to all health topics

A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning who

Offers and supports programming and/or newsletter updates for Middle and Upper School parents on different health topics to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to talk to their children about the various social, emotional, and physical development-related issues they may face

Maintains consistent communication with students and colleagues and follows through with students in a professional and supportive manner
Qualifications & Requirements
Required

Bachelor’s degree in Health Education or related field

Minimum 2 years teaching health to middle and/or upper school students

Certification to teach grades 6-12 health education based on National Health Education Standards



Preferred

Master’s degree in Health Education or related field

Experience in human sexuality education and curriculum development, aligning with National Sex Education Standards

Experience in substance use prevention education and curriculum development

Experience in launching an initiative that required working collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders, preferably within an educational community.
