Job Description
Student Success Coach
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946, and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.
The Student Success Coaches will work as a part of the Student Success Program. Danville Community College’s Student Success Program was developed in alignment with the Virginia’s Community Colleges Chancellor’s College Success Coach Initiative (CSCI). The goal of the Student Success Program is to empower students to persist through challenges and/or barriers they may encounter on their educational journey at DCC by providing a holistic approach to student success.
The Student Success Coaches will provide academic advising, career assessment, career planning, financial aid assistance, and college/career preparedness services for students. In addition, the Student Success Coaches will assist with outreach, onboarding, and enrollment services to help prepare incoming students for a successful transition to DCC. The Student Success Program will serve as a fundamental link between students and campus services (i.e. Enrollment Services, Tutoring, Financial Aid, Advising, etc.) as well as other partner agencies and community resources (i.e. Single Stop, SNAP, Mental Health Services, etc.) to support student retention, progress, and completion.
Student Success Coaches will be expected to develop and implement intervention strategies designed to improve academic success and persistence of students at Danville Community College. The Student Success Coaches are expected to manage a caseload of approximately 300 students. Performance measures for the Student Success Program include course completion rates, GPA markers, retention metrics (semester to semester and year to year), as well as degree/credential attainment of students in the program.
