Correctional HVAC Technician Location: Somers, CT, Suffield, CT Date Opened: 6/26/2025 2:30:00 PM Salary: $62,099* - $80,789/year (*New state employees start at the minimum) Job Type: Open to the Public Close Date: 7/11/2025 11:59:00 PM The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is recruiting Correctional HVAC Technicians for Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, CT and MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, CT. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS Maintain steam, hot water heating and chill water piping/distribution systems; Maintain ventilation distribution, fan and HVAC systems; Maintain steam and hot water boilers; Maintain chilled water piping/distribution systems and chilled water (chillers) systems; Maintain cell ventilation and duct work; Supervising assigned inmates at a Correctional Institution; Keeping record of tool/inventory control; Protecting the health and safety of the public, staff and inmates; Snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for the police, medical, staff and public; Maintaining mandated compliances with Federal & State statute and agency directives and policies by assuring humane conditions of confinement in the facility through repair and maintenance. This position is full time on first shift, Monday through Friday, from 7:45 am until 3:00 pm. Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14-week paid hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT. ABOUT US The Department of Correction shall strive to be a leader in progressive correctional practices and partnered re-entry initiatives to support responsive evidence-based practices geared toward supporting reintegration and reducing recidivism under the Department's supervision. Safety and security shall be a priority component of this responsibility, coinciding with an unwavering respect for the human dignity of staff, victims, citizens and offenders. The Osborn Correctional Institution recognizes its stewardship responsibilities to the citizens of Connecticut, as well as to the residents of Somers and Enfield. The facility is a medium security institution that houses one of the largest inmate populations of the correctional facilities in the state. The facility operates under the Unit Management System. Under this model an assigned Unit Manager directs all the functions of their assigned units. There are 17 inmate-housing units each with its own specific institutional function. The Unit Management System enhances safety and security by limiting inmate mass movement and providing for controlled movement during the daily institutional routines. The facility supports an inpatient medical hospital, a mental health unit, a comprehensive education program, an inpatient Addiction Services unit and one of the largest Correctional Industries Program in the state. The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution is a level 4/5, high/maximum security level multi-mission facility for adult males. Based on its offender population, it is the largest correctional facility in New England. It came into being on May 15, 2001 as the result of the consolidation of the Walker Reception and Special Management Unit and the MacDougall Correctional Institution and sits on a combined 140 acres. The facility is accredited by the American Correctional Association. During its last accreditation audit in June 2008, the institution scored a 100% on the mandatory requirements and the non-mandatory factors. The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution provides a highly structured environment to manage long-term sentenced offenders, protective custody offenders and high bond unsentenced offenders with programs designed to address the needs of each population. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Three (3) years of experience in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade. NOTE: Based on an individual’s technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the highly skilled level. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience. Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.
