Job Description
Senior Editor
POSITION DESCRIPTION

SENIOR EDITOR
LOCATION: REMOTE
FULL-TIME
SALARY RANGE: $100,000-$120,000

The Sentry is seeking an experienced Senior Editor responsible for directing and executing comprehensive editorial, review, and quality assurance processes for all reports, policy briefs, presentations, and other written materials. The Senior Editor works directly with report authors, in collaboration with other relevant staff, to produce high-quality and high-impact reports and materials to engage a range of audiences, from experts and policymakers to journalists, influencers, and the general public.

Key Responsibilities

General Editing:
Serve as senior editor on all projects published by The Sentry, including investigative and policy reports, op-eds, alerts, and other materials.
Ensure alignment of written products with agreed policy frameworks and language, strategic objectives, and core mission.
Ensure that all content meets The Sentry’s editorial and style standards.
Steward, implement, and maintain The Sentry’s voice across products written by diverse authors.
Strengthen structure, sequencing, coherence, and clarity of content, ensuring that main ideas and policy points are presented powerfully and concisely.
Check facts and quotes cited in public sources, flag assertions needing citation, and provide research support when possible.
Evaluate, challenge, and bolster, as appropriate, the logic, coherence, and consistency of facts and arguments presented by author(s).
Liaise with external lawyers on libel reviews and implement and maintain risk-mitigating legal phrasing.

Coaching and Mentoring:
Work with writers of varying skill and experience, providing constructive feedback and one-on-one coaching to improve key writing skills including storytelling, structure, readability, and persuasiveness.
Review and give constructive feedback at every stage of a product, from conception to final draft.

Project Management:
Direct editorial processes for all reports from conception through to final product, working with policy, investigations, communications, and development teams.
Manage production processes and coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure reviews and revisions occur.
Manage freelance editors and translators.
Coordinate legal reviews and revisions, in consultation with authors and legal counsel.
Set production timelines, negotiating priorities, schedules, and expectations.
Review and give guidance on research proposals and outlines.
Track progress of editorial products and update directors and teams regularly, including by hosting a weekly product status meeting.
Collaborate across time zones with global colleagues.
Routinely engage with senior leadership to update them and seek their input.
Demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changing priorities and schedules.
Create and implement trainings on editorial and production processes for staff members.

Quality Assurance:
Manage and maintain strict version control on reports and other written products.
Write and maintain in-house stylebook, ensuring authors’ adherence to style guidelines.

Other:
Engage in administrative and organizational tasks as necessary.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements
Required Experience and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
At least 5 years working in a professional editing role
Superior writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills
Demonstrated experience working effectively in a fast-paced, rapid-response environment, balancing multiple projects and tasks while meeting deadlines
Well-developed decision-making, planning, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
A high level of energy, dependability, creativity, initiative, and passion
Commitment to The Sentry’s mission and goals
Based in the United States


Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
Foreign language skills, especially French or Arabic
Experience working on corruption, illicit finance, environmental crimes, human rights, or conflict
