UDC Officially Launches New Strategic Plan: “Delivering on the Promise

Posted By: TaQuan Ford on December 09, 2024 The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) officially launched its new five-year strategic plan, Delivering on the Promise, during an inspiring event as part of the university’s “Firebird Reunion” homecoming celebration. The occasion was attended by key stakeholders, students, faculty, and distinguished speakers, including UDC President Maurice D. Edington and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Delivering on the Promise marks an exciting new chapter for UDC, setting the vision for the university from 2024 to 2029. Built on three core pillars—excellence in student achievement, alignment with workforce needs, and impactful community service—the plan is designed to elevate UDC’s status as a leader not only in the District but also across the nation. “Our vision is simple: we excel, we work, we serve,” said President Maurice D. Edington. “These values have always been integral to UDC’s success. As a public university and proud HBCU, we’ve long prepared students for successful careers, cultivated future leaders, and contributed to the growth of our communities. This strategic plan takes that commitment to new heights as we strive to become the world-class flagship university for the nation’s capital.” The strategic plan outlines several ambitious goals, including doubling the number of degrees awarded annually, improving student retention, expanding dual enrollment and early-college programs, and enhancing academic support services. The plan also emphasizes increasing scholarships, financial aid, and research funding, while strengthening UDC’s role in serving the local workforce and broader community. Mayor Muriel Bowser, a steadfast advocate for UDC, highlighted the essential role the university plays in shaping the future of Washington, D.C. “UDC is not just the District’s university – it is a key partner in creating pathways to the middle class for D.C. residents and ensuring a strong future for our city,” said Mayor Bowser. “When UDC succeeds, Washingtonians succeed. Our public education system is a major success story in D.C., and I am proud to be part of the ongoing progress at UDC.” Already, UDC has made significant strides in impacting the community. Last year, student-attorneys from the David A. Clarke School of Law provided over 33,000 hours of free legal services to the public. The Firebird Farm and urban food hubs donated more than four tons of fresh produce to local organizations. Additionally, UDC continued its outreach to underserved youth in the District, including offering an environmental justice internship for high school students. “We’re unstoppable when we come together—when we invest in each other and in a shared vision of greatness for this university—as one UDC,” said Edington. “This plan positions us to continue serving as a national model for urban student success, a powerhouse for workforce development, and a research hub addressing the District’s most pressing challenges.” The Delivering on the Promise strategic plan is an exciting and bold step toward a brighter future for UDC, its students, and the communities it serves.
