Ravens back out of Maxx Crosby trade, sign Trey Hendrickson. Raiders keep Crosby, lose 2 1st round picks.

The NFL proved that it continues to be a 24/7, 365 day sport as on Tuesday Night news broke that sent shock waves across the sports world that some insiders across the league and of course fans believe will cause a rippling effect to change rules in trades and free agent signings in the future as the Baltimore Ravens sited a failed physical as a reason to send 5 time Pro Bowler Maxx Crosby back to the Las Vegas Raiders going back on their March 6th agreement for the Defensive End. The Ravens get their ‘26 and ‘27 1st round picks back in the deal as well, who still have never traded away their 1st round pick in the franchise's 30-year history.

“This thing stinks, there’s 100% shadiness going down right now,” says Dianna Russini, Senior NFL Insider for The Athletic on The Dan Patrick Show, Wednesday. And history doesn’t exactly favor them in this situation. In 2018, the Ravens agreed to a 4-year, $29 million deal with then Wide Receiver Ryan Grant, but the Ravens' doctors flagged an ankle issue, and he failed his physical, which put the Ravens in a position to void his deal and pursue veteran Wideout Michael Crabtree instead. The same happened in 2020, when Baltimore had a deal with another Defensive End, Michael Brockers, that fell apart over questions the Ravens' front office had about Brockers' long-term health.

Understandably, the Raiders brass have a reason to be upset at this shocking development, as they have operated the free agency period so far under the assumption that they owned the Ravens' 1st-round picks in '26 and '27.

Big signings like Ex-Ravens Center Tyler Linderbaum, Ex-Vikings Wide Receiver Jalen Nailor, amongst others, along with this year's 14th pick that they would’ve owned from Baltimore that would have gone a long way in shoring up the start of Quarterback Fernando Mendoza's era, assuming he’s the player the Raiders take 1st overall in a month and a half. On top of that, this almost surely ruins Crosby’s price around the league if the Raiders wish to trade him again, as the Ravens were reportedly the only team in the NFL to offer two 1st-round picks, and now they backed out of that deal.

Despite this, though, the Ravens have arguably come out better than they were before they called off the Crosby trade. With the reacquisition of their two 1st round picks, along with the news that dropped Wednesday morning that the Ravens have signed 4-time Pro Bowler Trey Hendrickson to a 4-year, $112 million deal. Racking up 39 sacks and 38 tackles for loss over the previous 3 seasons, Hendrickson should be a disruptor on the defensive side of the ball that a traditionally defensive-oriented team such as the Ravens is in desperate need of under 1st-year Head Coach Jesse Minter. ESPN’s and NFL Live’s Host Laura Ruthledge brought this possibility up on Wednesday, flatly asking: “Are the Ravens better off in some ways?” which is a valid thought given the fact that they acquired a game wrecker in Hendrickson while keeping their picks, something that wasn’t possible with the trade of Crosby.

Despite the fact that the Ravens and Raiders don't play this year, this controversy is sure to cause bad blood between the two teams and even the respective GMs, Eric DeCosta and John F. Spytek, that will just continue to build hype for an NFL Season that is 6 months away.
