Posted By: Will Moss on April 02, 2026 At Florida A&M University, Be Out Day represents more than just another campus event—it's a cherished tradition that captures the essence of HBCU culture. Each spring, Rattlers gather on campus for one of the most anticipated experiences of the academic year, and 2026 promises to deliver another unforgettable celebration centered on music, food, and community. This year's Be Out Day will feature performances from Bunna B and Fly Boi Keno, adding excitement to the mid-semester celebration that students eagerly await. Key Takeaway: Be Out Day has evolved from a small "Fun Day" barbecue in the late 1980s into a nationwide tradition, with FAMU alumni now hosting similar events in cities across the country including Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, and Houston.
Student Government Association President Zayla Bryant shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming event: "I've been working diligently with the Be Out Day Committee to create an experience that will be an everlasting memory for the spring semester." A Unique Place in HBCU CultureBe Out Day holds a special place in the HBCU tradition landscape. Unlike Homecoming's high-energy, fast-paced atmosphere or Commencement's formal and reflective tone, Be Out Day offers something refreshingly different—a moment to slow down. Students gather outdoors to enjoy music, share food, and spend quality time together in what many simply call a "vibe." The atmosphere captures what makes Florida A&M University unique: connection, culture, and community. From Fun Day to a National MovementBefore becoming the large-scale event it is today, Be Out Day started much smaller. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the event was known as "Fun Day," created by Colonel Bernard Hendricks, then director of student activities. Marvin Greene recalled the humble beginnings: "It was almost like his personal barbecue. He literally cooked the food himself." After Hendricks' passing, student leaders reimagined the event in 1992. Under SGA President Rod Stovall and his leadership team, the gathering was renamed "Be Out Day," and the tradition took on a life of its own. Greene noted the transformation: "It went from 'Fun Day' to 'Be Out Day.' It created a life of its own." Intentional Experience and Lasting ImpactChristian Aristilde, chief operating officer of Winners Circle, helped bring this year's entertainment lineup together. He emphasized the thoughtful approach behind the event: "It's not simply about putting artists on a stage. It's about the experience and how it brings people together. At Winners Circle, everything we do is intentional. We want students to remember this moment for years to come." A Much-Needed Mid-Semester BreakBe Out Day serves a crucial purpose in the academic calendar, arriving when students need it most. Bryan Smith, associate vice president for Student Affairs, explained its significance: "Historically, it's a chance to decompress after working hard. It's a time to celebrate and be rewarded." The event offers students a chance to relax and recharge before finals through games, food, music, and time with friends. The celebration continues to feature diverse food vendors offering everything from barbecue to seafood and classic campus favorites. As Smith noted: "I like the food. We've got vendors from all over. It's just a great time." Over the years, Be Out Day has attracted major performers, including notable artists like FAMU alumna K. Michelle and Jacquees. What started on FAMU's campus has evolved into a nationwide phenomenon. Alumni now host Be Out Day-style events in cities including Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, and Houston. Greene reflected on this expansion: "That speaks to how influential that time was. Alumni are recreating it across the country." Originally reported by HBCU Gameday.
