Posted By: Will Moss on April 04, 2026 Florida A&M University's reputation for producing world-class performers continues to flourish on Disney's biggest stages, as multiple FAMU alumnae have brought Princess Tiana to life—from the recording studio to live theatrical performances. The legacy began with Anika Noni Rose, the FAMU alumna who made history as the voice of Princess Tiana in Disney's 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog. Her groundbreaking performance introduced Disney's first Black princess and set a standard for authenticity, musical excellence, and cultural representation that continues to resonate throughout the entertainment industry and remains a profound source of pride for the FAMU community. Key Takeaway: FAMU alumnae have created a pipeline of excellence in portraying Princess Tiana, from the original animated film to live performances on Disney Cruise Line ships, showcasing the university's enduring influence in entertainment. A New Generation Takes the StageNow, Rae'Kwan Bostic, a graduate of FAMU's College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, is carrying that torch forward as she currently performs as Princess Tiana aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship. Her journey reflects the same discipline and dedication that has defined countless FAMU performers before her. Raised in a family with deep ties to FAMU's musical tradition, Bostic developed her work ethic from an early age. As one of eight siblings in a household led by two FAMU alumni parents, she grew up immersed in music, discipline, and tradition. "My dad taught me how to play saxophone originally," Bostic said, describing long summer days filled with structured practice and performance. During her time at FAMU, Bostic balanced multiple demanding roles, demonstrating the kind of commitment that would later serve her professional career:
"It takes discipline and practice," she said. "I would be singing for about six to seven hours a day." The Road to DisneyBostic's path to landing the role wasn't straightforward. After graduating, she moved to Atlanta for regional theater before relocating to New York City, where she faced the grueling reality of professional auditions. "I auditioned all last year... about 43 auditions from January to September," she said. "It was a constant 'no, no, no.' But if you love what you do, you'll keep going." That persistence ultimately paid off when she landed the Princess Tiana role—an opportunity that pushed her beyond her comfort zone into full theatrical performance. "I'm not much of a theater kid," she admitted. "It's not just singing, it's feeling the moment, being in character." For Bostic, portraying Tiana carries special significance because of the connection to Anika Noni Rose and the FAMU legacy she represents. "Continuing the legacy in all parts is just an honor," she said. "It's been very humbling and rewarding." Her sister Jada Bostic describes Rae'Kwan as both humble and powerful: "She is the most kind and gentle spirit, with a standard of excellence that doesn't falter." Beyond the stage, Rae'Kwan is also known as the "keeper of family recipes," preserving traditions passed down from previous generations. Bostic hopes her journey encourages others—especially young women—to stay committed to their dreams. "I want people to be fearless and go after what they want," she said. "If you see it down the road, keep chasing it and don't give up." Her story, paired with Anika Noni Rose's groundbreaking role, demonstrates that the path from FAMU to Disney is not just possible—it's becoming a cherished tradition that continues to inspire the next generation of HBCU performers.
