Posted By: Will Moss on April 04, 2026 Tomekia Reed, the decorated coach who transformed Jackson State into a SWAC women's basketball dynasty, is stepping away from her role at Charlotte to focus on her health. Charlotte Director of Athletics Kevin White announced that Reed would be taking a medical leave of absence from her duties as the 49ers' women's basketball head coach. The news comes less than a year after Reed departed Jackson State to take the reins at Charlotte in April 2024. Key Takeaway: Reed built one of the nation's premier HBCU women's basketball programs during her five-year tenure at Jackson State, leading the Tigers to three consecutive SWAC regular-season championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. White expressed the university's support for Reed during this challenging time. Coach Reed has our full love and support as she manages her health and recovery. We know Niner Nation and the women's basketball community will be respectful of her privacy and continue to offer their support as well. Reed's impact on HBCU athletics, particularly at Jackson State, cannot be overstated. During her five-year run with the Tigers, she established the program as a powerhouse within the Southwestern Athletic Conference and elevated its national profile. Her success in Jackson, Mississippi, made her a highly sought-after coaching talent and ultimately led to her opportunity at the Division I level with Charlotte. Continuity in LeadershipAssociate head coach and recruiting coordinator LaShonda Cousin will step in as interim head coach during Reed's absence. Cousin brings valuable continuity to the program, having worked alongside Reed for six seasons at Jackson State before following her mentor to Charlotte. The HBCU community continues to celebrate Reed's legacy and the foundation she built at Jackson State, while rallying around her during this period of recovery. Her coaching tree and influence on women's basketball extends far beyond wins and championships, representing excellence in HBCU athletics. Originally reported by HBCU Sports.
