Posted By: Will Moss on April 05, 2026 Southern University head coach Marshall Faulk walked away from Saturday's spring showcase with plenty of reasons for optimism as the Jaguars prepare for his first full season at the helm. The Hall of Fame running back turned first-year head coach saw glimpses of the aggressive, attacking identity he's working to establish in Baton Rouge. The defensive unit set the tone early in the scrimmage, showcasing the aggressive mentality that Faulk envisions becoming the program's trademark under defensive coordinator Todd Lyght. "We're not going to be a bend-but-don't-break type defense," Faulk told the media following the team scrimmage. "We're going to come after people. I like how the defense attacked the offense early — that's what Coach (Todd) Lyght brings." While the defense dominated early, the offensive unit found its rhythm as the scrimmage progressed. Faulk praised his offense for responding with explosive plays through the air and improved execution in critical situations. Key Takeaway: Faulk emphasized that winning contested catches will be crucial for Southern's championship aspirations, stating, "If we want to win the SWAC and go to the Celebration Bowl, our receivers have to win those 50-50 balls. Today, we saw that." Quarterback Battle Heats UpOne of the most intriguing storylines emerging from the spring showcase is the ongoing quarterback competition. Returning signal-caller Ashton Strother and Long Beach City College transfer Wyatt McCauley both received first-team reps on Saturday, and neither has separated himself in the battle for the starting role. "It's heated right now," Faulk said. "They've both earned the right for us to review the film before making any decisions. I don't think it's fair to speak on either one without watching the tape because they're both really in it." The Jaguars now shift their focus to offseason workouts as Faulk and his coaching staff continue building a roster capable of significant improvement. Southern is looking to rebound from a challenging two-win season in 2025, and Saturday's spring showcase provided encouraging signs that the program is trending in the right direction under Faulk's leadership. With clear championship goals and an identity taking shape on both sides of the ball, the Jaguars faithful have reason to believe better days are ahead for Southern football.
