The HBCU Center for Excellence awards Jarvis Christian College Behavioral Health Grant
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on December 15, 2014 The Jarvis Christian College Counseling Center recently received a Behavioral Health grant from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Center for Excellence (HBCU-CFE). The grant supports the development and implementation of a campus-wide program that focuses on substance abuse and violence intervention. The grant will be used for training supplies and materials, as well as travel reimbursement for selected students to complete internships in the spring semester. The Counseling Center has selected Jarvis students to be Peer Educators. They will use a formal bystander intervention model designed by the University of Arizona, called STEP UP! Approximately 30 students have been recruited and are currently participating in various seminars, workshops and awareness events that emphasize domestic violence awareness, bullying prevention, suicide intervention, social media etiquette, understanding cultural diversity, support for single parents, and self-esteem enhancement. The goal is for Peer Educators to train 500 students by May 2015 to address issues like alcohol abuse, hazing, bullying, sexual assault, gambling, and violence. Next year, Peer Educators plan to visit nearby high schools and middle schools to help train students and implement the Step UP! program within their schools.
