Ask Vanessa - Professional Experience

Posted By: Vanessa Morrison on November 02, 2016 Addresses the most common issues regarding resumes. From time to time there will be an article written on trends concerning the resume, as well as articles pertaining to resumes and interviews. As we work our way down the page, the next section is Professional Experience. This section is very important as it tells the employer where you work. But, how do you do that and make the most important jobs come to life. First, you only need to list 10 years’ experience in this section. For government resumes, it is totally different and I will address that in another column. It is customary to list them chronologically, listing the most recent job first. In that listing, you would list job title or position description, name of employer, dates of employment, and the location. Let’s take a look at what that may consist of. Regional Account Representative 2011- Current Universal Studios-Tampa, Florida Now, you will want to list the achievements of the position you held. Employers like to see what you have accomplished in this section. This could be if you increased something, make sure you list it as an % increase. If you reduced something, or increased something, employers want to see to the numbers or % that you did this. Always think achievement, in this section. Many times, people write their resume and it is a regurgitation of the job description and that is not what makes you shine. You must remember, you are up against hundreds if not thousands, depending on the position. What will make you stand out among all of them is achievements. I would list 6-8 of these. If you don’t have 6-8 then list at least 4 minimums. But, list what you’ve done as achievements. You (example: Aided, Instructed, Taught, Launched, Compared, Provided). I like to tell people when you hit a milestone, or, you did something big in the eye of the employer and you received an accolade or an email for a good job, or you started a process, wrote a newsletter, took the initiative, etc. That is the time to put it on the list of monthly achievements. It also helps in time for your performance review. If you liked this article and want to submit your question about your resume. Do so, at copywritersmarket@gmail.com.
