Ebony Acton, Miss Virginia State University

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 13, 2017

Hometown: Annapolis, MD

Year in School: Senior

Major/Minor: Criminal Justice

Expected Graduation: 2017

Extracurricular Activities: I am a Virginia State University Woo Woo, member of the Student Government Association, and a woman of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Leisure Activities: I enjoy reading, dancing, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of America and volunteering in homeless shelters. During the summer, I love to go the beach and eat fried Oreos. Although I hate being cold, I always play in the snow as if the child in me never left. I'm a faithful sports fanatic so watching and playing sports is second nature.

Career Goals: After obtaining my master's in criminology, I aspire to become a professor to encourage the upcoming generations to become advocates and authoritative figures in the criminal justice system.

In addition to being a professor, I would love to implement a non-profit organization for youth, especially African Americans and Hispanics, to teach them about maximizing their finances and understanding politics.

What is your most memorable contribution as a Campus Queen?: I have had a number of memorable moments since becoming Miss Virginia State University. However, if forced to choose one that stands out the most, it would be my participation in Hispanic Heritage Month. It was thrilling to instruct various Latin dances for my peers. Observing students at a HBCU exiting their comfort zones and entering into a different cultural aspect - not hesitating to embrace an unknown activity - was a precious feeling. They really enjoyed themselves, and I am continuously asked to do it again as students strive to improve their skills. I have steadily encouraged individuals to become more culturally aware and to not be afraid to be genuine to others and one's self. I feel like I accomplished a major goal with this effort...truly a memory to treasure for a lifetime.
