Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 18, 2017 Hometown: St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands Year in School: Senior Major/Minor: English Major, Music Minor Expected Graduation: 2017 Extracurricular Activities: I am a member of the Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm (clarinet player) and also a proud member of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority Incorporated. I was a founder of the Marching Storm's Student Media Team, and before becoming Miss Prairie View I handled the band's publicity, graphics and social media, as well as their photo and video promotion. Currently, I work regularly with the school's Student Government Association to host on-campus events for the student body. This year, I was made an honorary member of the PVAMU Panther Advisor Leaders (an organization which was founded to mentor incoming freshmen). I also joined a female student leadership organization called the Purple Jackets, and I also mentor and work with many of the female students on campus to assist them with their own platforms and programs. My platform, Hello Queen, was created to promote female empowerment, gender equality, sexual assault awareness and domestic violence awareness on HBCU Campuses. Leisure Activities: In my spare time I love to take photos of friends and film them. I have a youtube vlog which I use to capture my every day life. I am also an avid reader and writer. My favorite way to spend my free time is reading Huffington Post (Black Voices) articles and watching other youtube vloggers online. I also love exploring different Texas cities and hiking. I believe that God crafted the world in such a beautiful way so that we could cherish it and see every inch of it while we are alive. Career Goals: I hope to someday become the next Ava DuVernay (or, I hope to someday be "the first" Jeaiza Quinones.) Because I am passionate about film and media, my ultimate career goal is to become a documentary filmmaker and social activist. I hope to use my films to bring about social change; especially change that will affect and uplift the lives of women of color around the world. There are women in this world who still do not have a voice, and it is my mission to ensure that they are given a platform. What is your most memorable contribution as a Campus Queen?: My most memorable contribution has been the ability to give other women on campus the platform to tell their own stories. In October I began filming a documentary entitled "Letters to My Sister" based off of a book of the same name which was created by the Miss Prairie View that came before me, Ivy Walls. The film features women of all colors, shapes, sizes and cultural backgrounds discussing their lives, struggles, and how their journeys began at this particular HBCU. It was a celebration of the profoundness of "The Prairie View Woman". Being able to film the women of my campus and give this film to the school was truly be a humbling moment for me that I won't ever forget.
