Voorhees will host its annual Absalom Jones Feast Day Service
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on February 01, 2017

Voorhees College will host its annual Absalom Jones Feast Day celebration, to recognize the African American presence in the Episcopal Church, on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. in St. Philip’s Episcopal Chapel.

Absalom Jones was the first ordained African-American priest in the Episcopal Church in the United States. He became a religious icon of the late 1700s and early 1800s and helped to abolish slavery in America.

The celebration will feature guest speaker the Very Rev. Richard “Rick” C. Lindsey who is the rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head Island, S.C. and dean of the Southern Deanery in the Episcopal Church in South Carolina.

Lindsey is a graduate of Towson State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in early American history. He earned a master’s degree in divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School with special emphasis in pastoral theology.

The Right Rev. Gladstone “Skip” Adams, provisional bishop of the Episcopal Church in South Carolina, based in Charleston, S.C. will also be attending the celebration.

Following the service, hand-crafted wooden items by Father Jack Neitert will be on sale in the Massachusetts Hall Auditorium. All proceeds will be donated to the Voorhees Annual Absalom Jones Scholarship Fund.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Megan Freeman, director of communications, at 803-780-1191 or at mfreeman@voorhees.edu.
