Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 06, 2017 Destiney Lawrence Miss Jackson State University 2016-2017 Destiney Lawrence, originally from Fairhope, Alabama, is the daughter of Murray Lawrence and Theresa Howard. The proud Biology Pre-Medicine major, was selected by her peers as the 77th Miss Jackson State University for the 2016-2017 academic school year. She completed both her primary & secondary education at Fairhope schools. While attending Fairhope High School, she received accolades in volleyball and track. She was a member of the Student Council, Teen Literacy Council, Environmental Science Club, Key Club, and Interact Club. While at Jackson State, Destiney has served her campus and class in several capacities. Her first step towards royalty started with her election as Miss Sophomore 2014-2015. Through her platform, "Connecting the Dots with Destiney", she highlighted the areas of unity, leadership, and mentorship. Under this platform, she was able to reach out to the young women on campus through a key empowerment forum that bridged the social & emotional gaps between them. Along with her king, Kevron Skye McMillian (Mr. Sophomore 2014-2015), Destiney adopted Barr Elementary in Jackson, MS. The purpose of this adoption was to give JSU students free access to gain community service hours and to act as positive role models and mentors. During her junior year, she served as the Executive Secretary of the Student Government Association. Destiney will continue her legacy of service to her peers through her position as Miss JSU under her platform: Thee Road to your Destiney. The main focus of this platform is to empower students to "embrace their destiny", by walking confidently in who they are called to be so that they may reach their fullest potential. Her awareness of the academic, social, and cultural hardships that students face during their matriculation at Jackson State is what fuels her reign. She is dedicated to providing superior motivation that students need to remain steadfast, unmovable, and unshakeable in the face of all adversity. She hopes to create a sturdy support system for students that will uphold them in every aspect: academically, mentally, and physically. Destiney aspires to become an Obstetrician Gynecologist (OB/GYN). As an OB/GYN, she will specialize in treating female patients by either providing primary care or care related to pregnancies and the reproductive system. She plans to attend Emory University School of Medicine and to complete her residency in Atlanta, Georgia. Destiney’s ultimate goal is to open her own practice and mentor her patients. She especially wants her office to reach out to young women who lack parental guidance and or support. She strongly desires to serve as an example, being living proof that it is possible to overcome any circumstances regardless of their difficultly. Destiney Lawrence is ecstatic to serve as the 77th Miss Jackson State University, a position that is more than being a pretty woman with a crown upon her head, waving at football games. They say, "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." The only thing that heavies the head of this queen is knowing the burdens that many of her peers are facing alone. This is what compels her to be the motivator, the inspirer, and the servant of her Dear Old College Home. She lives by the mantra of Robert G. Ingersoll: "We rise by lifting others.” If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
